I'm still thinking and hoping that the limitations of Kirsten Bell are in the script, not the actress - and I do think I've seen glimmers of something better from Elle, so we shall see. I hope so, partly for the sake of "Heroes" - I'm really rooting for the show, and would like to think that it isn't so limited in stereotypes as to make all the pretty young women vapid whiners.
More than that, I was so impressed by Kirsten Bell as Veronica Mars, I'd like to think she has the potential to mature into some excellent and substantial acting in her future career - something we haven't seen much of from Holllywood actresses, who usually disappear for the next crop of beautiful young women, rather than becoming noteworthy actresses. But maybe it was just a matter of having a perfect fit between actress and script for that one show.
And yes, this is one of my soapboxes....
Hayden Panettiere has the same sort of potential - so so I'm starting to hope - she has done rather well on several occasions, rising to the script when the script gives her challenges - and often doing a rather poor performance when the script doesn't give her substance to rise to.
I agree with the scene where she wanted to summon the Haitian. (Not just because the Haitian is one of my favourite characters in the show, especially now that Caude is gone.) I agree both with its unexpected strength, and with the not-quite-right nature of it. And yes, West should go away - he's a dweeb, and hasn't improved an iota since we first saw him. I like him best when he's flying, because that's a cool superpower. (Reverting to my nine-year-old self for a moment there.)
But I'd rather see Nathan flying than West. And I think Nathan would fit into that bit of story, too - having lost his sons, he goes to discover his daughter; Bennet refuses to let her see Nathan; she does anyway; Nathan helps here, forms an uneasy alliance with Bennet. Hmm. I'd like that. More than I like West, anyway.
Monia and Claude - I'd love to see that! I find Monica very pretty, in a big-eyed manga sort of way, but I'm finding the character irritatingly helpless. She moved up a notch, though, by going after Micah's backpack. Good for her. And then moved down a notch by getting herself caught and overpowered.
Yes, Quinto is a total ham. And maybe that's why Sylar never strikes me as really scary (or even really crazy), whatever he does. It isn't the maniacal glee we see in John Simms' version of the Master or anyone's version of the Joker, it's the glee of a boy enjoying himself too much - there's not enough menace there.
