Because I needed a break from other things...

As per usual this season, some ups and downs, but first and foremost, Joanna Cassidy! Yay! (Was shooting her in the back a reference to Blade Runner?) The one thing the show has been consistently good with is the women 35 and older, which is no small thing, and Joanna Cassidy is fabulous, always. Ashley Crow and Nichelle Nichols didn't have much to do but be resolute, but they did it beautifully.

As for the younger women, I'm not really "feeling" Elle. Kristen Bell had a certain charm as Veronica Mars, but she seems a bit limited as an actress. Elle is Veronica with just a little bit more snottiness. But Claire was pretty good at threatening her (although Hayden could also vary her technique a little - whether crying or threatening, she tends to tighten her jaw to the same notch).

While I didn't particularly care for it narratively, the scene where she was seeking out the Haitian had a surprisingly lyrical tone and pacing, possibly the best individual scene in a while. Still, West! Go away! Claire, get a clue.

But I have to say, my favourite character this season really seems to be Monica. It's not her plot, it's just her. The whole comic book thing was an excruciating bit of exposition, but there's something so appealing about the actress. That scene where she's just standing in the doorway, listening is really telling, because she gave it so much intensity. I can't help it. I want to see Monica with Claude. Just think of the kickass training sessions!

Adam/Kensei continues to underwhelm me. Peter works best when he's matched with a stronger male character - Claude, obviously, and even Nathan or Hiro. This dynamic duo is bland and boring. Next!

Dear God, the Sylar/Maya scenes just made me ROFL. They were so baaaaad they had a certain parodic charm that I'm sure was utterly unintended. Have I just forgotten, or was Quinto always such a ham? I mean, I know he is a ham, but this had cloves and pineapple chunks on.

Hmmm. Well, I do think it's better than the beginning of the season was.

Now, I'm kinda sorta interested in Tin Man coming up this weekend. It looks rather ropey in terms of visual style, but hey, I'm a fan of Blake's 7, so I have no room to talk. And I loved The Tenth Kingdom, but a sense of humour is so helpful in cases like that!
