Adam - part g

Jack wakes up in the vault unsure of why he is having a nap down there, he returns to the main area to discover that they have all lost 48 hours of their life.

Oh, look, what is Ianto doing? Something we never saw him do while Adam was around.

No more direct looks between Jack and Ianto, back to looking at each other while the other one isn’t.

A little later, Jack calls Ianto to his office. We get nervous Ianto again.

He avoids looking at Jack. This in contrast to what he was like in the adam-verse when nervous around Jack, he would still look directly at him. Here, he is avoiding all eye contact and even tries to keep as far away from Jack as possible.

I know this is all about how Ianto looks at Jack but seriously; silly boy is missing this look from Jack!

Look at the way he has angled his body. Trying not to get close.

He finally has possession of his diary and now he looks at Jack.

But that look is minimal and he lowers his head to break eye contact and turns to leave without talking to Jack.

Jack tells him that “for the record…”

“…measuring tapes never lie!”

For one of the few times we get Ianto swearing. He also does it in silence, so Jack can’t hear.

He makes his escape.

But Jack has finished teasing him, but has a work question to ask.

He is off to make his escape, so he looks at Jack and smiles before leaving, while informing Jack he can’t help him.

Thus ends the episode of many plot holes or the one that is bloody hard to analyse. Because things are switched around, you have to look closely at each of their body language ‘tells’ and they did a great job to show you a contrast in their characters in the way they moved and reacted to each other. Most of these were very minor and you have to pay close attention to pick it up.

So how does Ianto see Jack in the Adam-verse? I am still of the belief that they weren’t in a relationship together. Their underlying trust in each other was still there below the surface. Ianto trusts Jack to do the right thing, Ianto also didn’t realise that Jack is a part of what defines him. That was shock on his face as the memory came back to him. Ianto was relaxed and flirty and open around the team, where previously this hadn’t been occurring. He winks at both Tosh and Gwen, when before he has been chivalrous with them both, not saucy. He is relaxed in his body posture, standing like he normally only does when Jack is around.
In the end he is very glad to go back to not being a murderer.

We get at the end of the episode a reminder of how they normally are to show the contrast with the Adam-verse. That Ianto is still nervous about revealing things to Jack. That he won’t maintain eye contact with Jack if he knows Jack is looking at him and wants to escape a moment from where he is embarrassed about something.
