In Search of an MP3-CD Player

Having repeatedly dropped the latest in a long line of Discmans, it’s getting to be that time of year where I need to buy a new one.  I know I’m going to get one with MP3 playback, and I’d really like one with a remote.  Walking to class in below-0 weather is no fun, but it’s considerably less fun when your frozen fingers have to pull the Discman out of your pocket or bag to click to the next song.

Anyway, my question is this:  Does anyone out there have an MP3-capable CD-player with a randomizing function that actually works?

Because I’ve had three different brands now, and all of them end up giving me the same 10-20 songs over and over again.  While this is theoretically possible, I doubt it’s very “random”.  My guess is the program was written for regular, non-MP3 CDs, and it creates a random number between 0 and 1 or something, then rounds up.  Hence, all results between .030 and .039 are giving me whatever song is at .04.  Or something.

The reasons don’t matter so much as the “it’s annoying” part, so I thought I’d throw the question out there.  I’m looking at new players, but I find myself skeptical at their claims of “includes random function”.

The question arises, by the way, out of yesterday's mail - I got my first certificates from the Best Buy Reward Zone program!  Buying my $2,000 computer (ouch) has earned me $80 in gift certificates.  Yay me!
