Alot of old literature was actually unappriciated in its "time". Maybe one day Dude, Where's My Car will be considered a great theatrical piece...lol

HA HA! "sounds like you have to be high to think it..." lol.

in my opinion deep thinking isn't based on how much you read or know about literature. maybe it helps out or in most cases it's an interest for "deep thinkers" but deep thinkers are people who look beyond the surface and take time to see things further than first glance. that's it, it doesn't matter how much you know or read.

I agree when it comes to actual literature, i.e. stories. Shakespear, Dickenson, Poe, etc are usless in today's world. The only possible benefit they may have is expanding your vocabulary and helping you to read faster. But you could achieve the same things by reading the Federalist Papers.

When it comes to old political classics, i.e. Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom, anything by Hayek, etc, those can improve your political thinking and I think anyone seriously interested in politics as a career should read those.

Yea, don't feel bad though, UofL isn't exactly a bastion of hard workers.

Thanks about the postings. Yea, I'm going to try to intern in DC this fall, at either Heritage or Cato. Where are you interning?

Have you ever noticed when you read certain classics you just scratch your head and say "now what does that have to do with anything"? Some of them seem like pure nonsense! I think it's a conspiracy for English teachers to load their students down with busy work so kids don't have too much free time on their hands to get it trouble. I guess that's my "deep thought" on the subject!

It's funny you put Jack Handley down. I don't think that character ever had a truly deep thought ever but he sure has some funny stuff!
