While a TA for History of Computing, I read paper after student paper including the phrase "we discussed about [noun phrase]." I painstakingly pointed out the misuse every time. Since then, I've seen this construction over and over. I became paranoid that perhaps I was the one committing the grammatical error. However, every dictionary entry I can find lists the verb as transitive. Am I missing some hip new idiomatic usage? Is some popular foreign language's closest translation to "discuss" intransitive? That at least might explain the e-mail from the researcher in Germany I just read.
