Yes, a new chapter! Sorry that you had to wait so long this time. But I hope you still enjoy reading my fanfic :D With this chapter, we're nearing us one of my favourite scenes in the whole story, so be prepared. It's not a very nice scene though... XD
And if you haven't noticed by now: passages in italics are not flashbacks, but a change in the main PoV.

Chapter 26

“Aiba Masaki… I have finally found you…,”

Sho could hardly hear the whispered words, but he understood them perfectly well, could almost read them in the stranger’s cold eyes.

“Leave… Sho out of this…,” left Aiba’s mouth weakly after what felt like an eternity of silence.

But his stuttered words only brought back the stranger’s smile.

“That, my dear Masaki, is something you should have thought about before you attacked him.”

And Sho saw the stranger’s fingers stop caressing Aiba’s cheek softly and how he instead dug his sharp fingernails into the vampire’s soft skin. The host felt a big lump in his throat when he saw the blood gushing out of the fresh wounds and flowing elegantly over the pure vampire’s fingers.

The host thought, he would have to puke when the stranger lifted his fingers to his mouth and licked Aiba’s blood, moaning in delight.

“So sweet… it’s almost a shame to kill you…,” the vampire said slowly, obviously trying to sound sad, but failing miserably. And then he had closed the distance between himself and Aiba again, his bloodstained lips so close to his ear that Sho thought he wasn’t even moving his lips when he continued to speak:

“I will give you one chance, one last chance. Join me and I will spare you. You will gain incredible power under my name… power over those dumb, stupid humans… you can have everything…”

But it was as if these words, this offer, had flipped a switch in Aiba. Sho could almost feel the fury emanating from his body as he clenched his hands into fists.

“Join you…? After everything you have done, you offer me this?” Aiba’s voice was firm and mocking again.

“You only want me to get rid of Nino! And afterwards you’ll kill me like you did everyone else.”

But why was he suddenly doing this? Why was he talking like this to the stranger, when not too long ago he had been terrified and respectful of him? What had the stranger’s words provoked in Aiba?

“Masaki-san…,” Sho carefully breathed the vampire’s name, afraid to interfere, but at the same time desperate to stop Aiba. Stop him from saying anything else that might be on the tip of his tongue. Things that would only make the vampire in front of them angrier.

But the other vampire didn’t look as relaxed and confident as he had before all of a sudden.

“I’ll deal with Ninomiya!” he hissed while a small grin appeared on his lips, “now that I have found his weakness…”

And Sho couldn’t breathe for a moment.

‘Weakness? Is he… is he talking about… Satoshi?’

His panicked gaze moved from the strange vampire’s cruel face to the back of Aiba’s head and back again restlessly. He didn’t know what to do. He only knew that they were in a very dangerous situation, understood the stranger’s threats, understood Aiba’s fear. But his fear for Satoshi overshadowed everything.

‘He can’t… He can’t touch him!’

But Sho could hardly finish the thought before the vampire was in front of him, grabbing him so fast that he didn’t even see him move. He only felt his strong grip, felt himself being pulled back, away from Aiba, saw him stand far far away a second later. The stranger had grabbed him, pressed him into his side, but he couldn’t see him, he couldn’t see anything.

Because suddenly there was only pain.

Everything around him was spinning in circles. It had happened so quickly, so unexpectedly, that Sho’s thoughts couldn’t keep up. But at the same time everything was so insignificant. The only thing that counted was the pain. Pain that was growing stronger, almost unbearable.

And it didn’t take long until he understood what was hurting him.

Teeth.

Teeth in his throat.

The vampire had bitten him and Sho screamed.

“Let go of me!! Stop! Please!!” he screamed, panicking, and started to fight back, he had to fight back because the pain was still getting worse. It was tearing him apart. Pulling him under.

And it was so much worse than Aiba’s bite had been.

The pain filled him, washed through his body until he felt that his insides were burning, that he would die. And the more he fought against it, the deeper the teeth plunged into his flesh.

Then all feeling left him.

And suddenly everything went black.

He had been distracted for only a second, for a moment his thoughts had wandered to Nino, to Ohno, to Matsumoto’s plans. For only a fraction of a second.

But Matsumoto had used that moment and Aiba’s eyes widened dramatically when he was suddenly not standing in front of him anymore. Before he could turn around he heard Sho’s scream.

“No! Sho, no!”

He turned around as fast as he could and was terrified to see how far away from him Matsumoto and Sho were. But what was even worse - he could see the vampire’s wide open mouth pressed against Sho’s throat. And he immediately knew what that meant.

At once Aiba had woken the vampire in himself, closed the distance between him and Matsumoto preternaturally fast and knew that he had only one chance. A vampire was distracted while he was biting someone. And because Aiba knew how fast Matsumoto could drain a body, he knew that he only had this one chance.

As fast as he could, he grabbed the pure vampire, ripped him off of Sho and punched him in the face with all his might. Not wasting a moment, he turned around to Sho, caught him before his lifeless body hit the ground and ran.

He ran and ran and ran, as fast as his legs allowed him. He ran into the night.

At the same time he hoped that it wasn’t too late for Sho. It couldn’t be too late!

“You bastard!” he heard Matsumoto yell behind him and knew that he was already closing in on him.

Matsumoto was faster and stronger. It was only a matter of time until he would catch them.

‘Damn!’

He felt the vampire draw closer; he didn’t even have to turn around, because he could feel his very presence. He came closer and closer and Aiba knew that it was almost over. He would grab him any second now, would kill him and then it would be over.

But he couldn’t allow that.

Aiba was panting, but still he continued running. His lungs burned with every breath he took and his body was close to reaching its breaking point. His human body couldn’t withstand his vampire power much longer.

Without really looking where he was going, Aiba ran. Turned right onto another street and slowly reached one of the poorer parts of town with lots of dark alleys. He didn’t know whether this would save or damn him. But he continued running, on and on he went, because there had to be something that could save them. He couldn’t run to Nino, Ohno was still there and that would only lead to an even bigger disaster. He had to get out of this alone.

“Masaki!” Matsumoto yelled, his voice much closer than it had been before. But he couldn’t turn around, he was too afraid. He didn’t want to know how close the vampire was.

But Aiba was slowing down. His legs were refusing to carry him any longer.

‘No! No, no, no! Go on, Aiba Masaki, go on! You can’t die here! Not like this! You have to… go on! Sho has to live! Run! Run, damn you!’

Then everything fell silent behind him. Aiba didn’t feel him anymore, didn’t hear him anymore. Matsumoto was gone.

‘What…?’ Suddenly he stopped, turned around as fast as he could, and then turned in a circle. But he couldn’t see anything. He was standing here, all alone in a dark, dank alley.

The only thing he heard was his loud breathing. Everything else was quiet. Too quiet.

He took a hesitant step forward, turned around quickly and took a step back. Panic as he had never before felt rose within him, made his whole body tremble.

On his back, Sho didn’t move.

Matsumoto was gone.

And the sky above was slowly turning light. Dawn was stealing across the land slowly, but could this really be his salvation?

Then he heard a hissing noise behind him that made his blood run cold. He didn’t manage to turn around before he felt fingers on his throat and long, sharp fingernails that cut into his flesh.

“You didn’t think you could outrun me, did you, Masaki?”

He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t speak. The lack of air wouldn’t kill him, but it would weaken his body and keep him from freeing himself of Matsumoto’s grip.

And he felt Sho slip down his back slowly.

“Not when I have finally found you! Not now!” Matsumoto hissed through clenched teeth, tightening his hold on Aiba’s throat. His limbs weakened more and more and he couldn’t hold up Sho any longer as the last of his strength seeped out of his arms. He heard a hollow sound and suddenly the weight on his back was gone. He had lost his hold on Sho.

And he still couldn’t move.

“Masaki…,” Matsumoto breathed and tightened his already impossibly tight hold on Aiba even further. His gag reflex set in, but no air reached his lungs. The quiet gasps that left his throat could hardly be heard. Matsumoto started to laugh.

It was over. Aiba couldn’t continue to fight, his strength had left him.

It was over.

And then he felt the warmth - only for a second - but he knew what it was immediately. Uncomfortable warmth. Sunlight.

“Shit!” Matsumoto cursed and in an instant the pressure, the pain in his throat was gone. Aiba felt the hated sunlight on his skin, but for the first time in his life he welcomed the feeling.

Because he could withstand it, even if the feeling was the worst he had ever experienced.

But the pure vampire had to run.

“Damn it…!” Aiba saw Matsumoto’s whole body tremble, “damn it, Masaki…!”

Matsumoto started running, seeking shelter in the darkness, shelter from the deadly rays of sunlight.

He was gone.

A loud sigh escaped Aiba’s throat, followed by a coughing fit. His body had to get used to breathing once again, had to regain its strength. It was a miracle that he was still standing on his own two feet. But he didn’t stay where he was for long, because the reason for his flight came back to him and he sank onto his knees next to Sho, turning him onto his back.

He was deathly pale and he wasn’t breathing.

“No…”

Had it taken too long? Has Sho died while they were running from Matsumoto? Had Aiba not been able to protect him after all?

“No! No, not you, Sho! Oh no, please don’t!” Aiba’s voice grew louder with each word, tears of desperation filled his eyes. But he had to get a hold of himself, had to do everything he could to save Sho. Somehow he had to save him.

Quickly he moved his hands over Sho’s body, tried to concentrate, tried to feel how much blood Matsumoto had left in it.

Not enough. Not nearly enough for him to survive.

Almost automatically he reached for the lifeless body, pressed it tightly against himself and buried his head in Sho’s chest.

“No… don’t go, Sho… please… I don’t… I don’t want to be responsible for your death… please don’t…”

He didn’t deserve this! Sho didn’t deserve to die like this after everything he had been through. Not at the hands of a vampire! Not here, not now, not like this.

And Aiba didn’t want to be alone again, either.

“He… wouldn’t leave me, if…,” he murmured with trembling lips as he slowly moved Sho into his lap.

He had to do it quickly, if he really wanted to-

Aiba’s breathing sped up, he looked at Sho’s relaxed face, let his gaze wander over the delicate lines of his face and finally come to rest on his lips.

Would Sho ever forgive him?

But would Aiba be able to forgive himself if he let Sho die?

He knew the answer to that already. The vampire bit down hard on his lower lip, at once filled with the salty, metallic taste of his own blood.

The he leaned down and pressed his still trembling lips gently against Sho’s.
