Wow, King's Fangire form is pretty awesome. It reminds me a bit of the Devil from Legend, actually. I think it's the face, it reminds of the Devil's big horns. And I thought it was a bit weird that just one Wake Up Fever finished Mio off; it figures that Bishop went and intervened just to make sure she was well and truly dead. He's so evil. OKAY cuddlesquid has been asking for recs about various people in spandex shows and the first one I want to rec is Gekiranger and I WILL TELL YOU WHY NOW.
Right yes Gekiranger deals with two rival martial arts schools, the schools of Gekijyuken and Rinjyuden. Gekijyuken is all about spirituality and unity and justice, while Rinjyuden is more about strength and power and kicking the shit out of people. The leader of Gekijyuken, Shafu (who incidentally is a giant talking cat but just roll with it) is training two students named Ran (Gekiyellow) and Retsu (Gekiblue) to fight against all the evil shit going down at Rinjyuden. Then they find this Mowgli wannabe who's been raised by pandas and tigers, who for some reason are able to live in perfect harmony and make loincloths, called Jan and he joins the team (as Gekired). And Shafu's like "OKAY EXCELLENT! RAN YOU CAN BE THE LEADER, NOW WHY DON'T YOU GO AND FIGHT UNSPEAKABLE EVIL? GREAT, OFF YOU GO".
Yes anyway so Rinjyuden's not really as buzzing a place as Gekijyuken and it basically just has this dude in a big cape called Rio who wants to be the most powerful person in the world (he does have a reason but for now let's just assume for about 40 episodes it's because he got bored one day) and this dead chick he resurrected called Mele who's completely in love with him despite the fact that he's just totally not that into her. And also she has this giant talking fly called Bae in her stomach and sometimes she vomits him up and he commentates on the fights.
No, really.

So Ran, Jan and Retsu grow close and eventually Jan falls in love with Ran and Retsu and doesn't ever shut up about their "triangle of justice" and throws himself on them and starts hugging them whenever he can and probably when the camera's not on him he's dreaming up their wedding and what colour flowers they'll have and who'll be best man and occasionally Rio beats them up and he's like "NOOOOO YOU CAN'T BEAT MY LOVERS UP I HAVEN'T MARRIED THEM YET" and goes apeshit and at one point Rio's like "a lion would always win in a fight with a tiger" which has always kind of bugged me because there have been studies on that and people have concluded that it'd be a pretty even match and anyway, aren't tigers quite a lot bigger than lions?
Anyway just as Jan has got Ran and Retsu to accept that he's going to try and get them into a threesome and weird panda-inspired positions might be involved, a former Gekijyuken student named Gou (Gekiviolet) returns to join the team. Retsu is particularly excited about this for various reasons. Jan is not thrilled. Actually he launches himself at Gou and tries to beat him up. But they get over it after they get Jan some counselling (seriously) and in quick succession another Gekijyuken student called Ken (Gekichopper) turns up. Ken has interesting facial hair and actually gets on pretty well with Jan because they're both quite thick.
At this point it's like five Gekijyuken students against just Rio and Mele but Mele's cool with this because a mysterious dude has turned up at Rinjyuden and he's like "HEY MELE DON'T WORRY, I CAN GIVE RINJYUDEN THE UPPER HAND" and then he does, so that's all great.
ANYWAY YES THAT'S THE BASIC STORY OF GEKIRANGER BUT IT'S SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. *___* At heart it really is pretty much a story about two things: Jan and Rio's pasts, what happened to make Jan a homeless jungle boy and Rio such a bitter, angry man and how they are connected, and the love between Jan, Ran and Retsu. I mean, you may think I was being faceticious about their epic threesome BUT I WASN'T. Triangles are a pretty major theme of the series - the triangle of the former Gekijyuken students (Gou, a woman named Miki and someone else); the triangle of Rio, Mele and the mysterious guy I already mentioned; the triangle of Jan, his mother and his father, but most of all Jan, Ran and Retsu and how they can't be beaten if they're together. And really they are so cute together. ♥ Together Ran and Retsu are completely capable and they get on well and they're able to work together responsibly and get things done, but without Jan there's no spark there that pulls them together. Ran and Retsu are both quite serious people, both focused on their own abilities and it's Jan that makes them open up and and forces them to care not just about him and his abilities but about each other too. IF YOU CAN'T TELL, I THINK THEY'RE COMPLETELY OT3. *___*
Anyway though I think for a Sentai Gekiranger is actually pretty dark, that's not to say it doesn't have light-hearted moments too. IT'S PRETTY DIFFICULT TO HAVE SOMEONE LIKE JAN RUNNING AROUND TAKING HIS CLOTHES OFF AND SHOUTING THAT HE'S A TIGER CONSTANTLY AND HAVE IT BE 24/7 DARK AND DEPRESSING. ALSO THIS IS SUPER SENTAI, SO.
