Dekaranger deals with an intergalactic police force whose main task is to get rid of all the aliens who are trying to do illegal shit on Earth, like smuggling or gambling or looking weird in public or whatever. The chief of this police force is a giant talking dog (YOU'RE PROBABLY NOTICING A THEME WITH SENTAI'S LEADERS BY NOW) called Doggie, because his parents were imaginative types, and he is helped by his (human) assistant Swan. They have control over four police officers (the Earth branch of the intergalactic police force is seriously understaffed, apparently) WHO I WILL TALK TO YOU ABOUT NOW because I think one of Dekaranger's charming points is the vivid personalities of its main characters and also because I think Dekaranger epitomises the colour archetypes pretty well.
Hoji aka Dekablue
Hoji is calm under pressure, very serious and very ambitious. I reckon when he was at school he was like a major teacher's pet and he'd like, get his essay shown off as "the ideal piece of work" that every other student should strive for and then he'd smile all "I KNOW I'M BETTER THAN YOU" at everyone else and they'd all conspire to beat him up in the playground after school but then it'd turn out that he'd also studied karate and they'd be like AH FUCK IT and he'd go home confident that he was totally the best at everything ever. So yeah, but despite that he does care for his team-mates and he's willing to go to really ridiculous, unhealthy lengths to make sure they're okay and that they definitely know he's awesome.
Sen aka Dekagreen
Sen is the archetypical Green, I think, and by that I mean he's a total freak and probably has subscriptions to some really sick porn sites. YES BUT DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE'S REALLY KIND OF WEIRD he's also really gentle and kind and the kind of guy that you'd like, poke over and over again and then pretend you didn't just to see how long it takes him to get mad at you (and it would take ages). But see, when he does get mad it's really scary just because he's usually so mellow. The rest of the team completely adore him and think he's just the cutest thing ever.
Jasmine aka Dekayellow
Jasmine in some ways is a lot like Hoji. She's like him in that she's also cool under pressure and very capable but unlike Hoji she does actually know when to stop and when to take a joke. She also has this gay thing going on with Umeko where they're like "I LOVE YOU :DDDD NO, I LOVE YOU MORE NO I LOVE YOU MORE NO LISTEN SHUT UP FOR A SECOND I LOVE YOU MOSTEST NO I LOVE YOU MOSTESTER" and feed each other and sit on each other's laps a lot. And also at one point this evil alien lady turns up and takes a liking to Jasmine and is all "HEY HOT STUFF LET'S GO BE EVIL TOGETHER" and for a minute Jasmine actually considers it because Yellow rangers do tend to be gay like rainbows but then she's like "ACTUALLY YOU KNOW WHAT, I CAN GET POON WITHOUT GOING EVIL".
Umeko aka Dekapink
Umeko is itsy bitsy and fierce and says she's the leader of the Dekarangers and even though she kind of isn't people are too scared to tell her otherwise because she might bite their ankles. She really likes to just lie around in baths singing and nobody questions why there's a bath in the police headquarters because Umeko would have to choke a bitch. UMEKO AIN'T NOTHING TO FUCK WITH, YO. Yes, but despite all this sassy in one pocket-sized space, Umeko is pretty sensitive and has this tendency to wear her heart on her sleeve. She has that typical Pink quality of falling in love hard and fast.
BUT THEN ONE DAY THIS TALL, GANGLY GUY CALLED BANBAN JOINS AND THE OTHER DEKARANGERS ARE LIKE "THIS GUY IS A TOTAL TWAT, ARE YOU FOR REAL?" AND DOGGIE'S LIKE "YES I'M FOR REAL" AND EVERYONE GROANS.
Ban aka Dekared
There's this portion of Sentai fandom that really hates Ban and even though I personally adore him and want to give him cuddles I can see why, because he's really loud and shouts basically all his dialogue and runs around screaming at people and never shuts up and when like, Dekayellow or Dekablue or someone is trying to fight an alien he runs in and he's like "HEY IT'S OKAY I'VE GOT THIS!!!!" and totally fucks it up. He takes a liking to Hoji, much to Hoji's horror and disgust, and follows him around calling him "partner" and trying to give him hugs and Hoji just wonders what he did in a past life to deserve this and Ban's like :D? :D? and Hoji's like >:(((( and Ban just DOESN'T CARE IT ONLY SPURS HIM ON.
So after a while the Dekarangers get used to Ban and he's accepted as a part of the team and even though he's annoying, they're forced to admit that he has an enthusiasm and a passion that kind of inspires them. See, the thing I like about Ban is he really cares about people. There's this one episode where they take this ganguro girl in for questioning about something or other that I've forgotten but is probably pretty serious and will blow the earth up or whatever and anyway, she's not cooperating and she acts like a complete brat and knees Ban in the groin and even though she's treated him like crap and made things difficult for him he still tries his best to help her and protects her and defends her when she needs him to. And not just in a "well, this is my job so even though you're kind of a pain I'll do it" way, he puts his whole heart into it like if she got hurt it'd be just as bad as if the world actually ended for him. Just that heartfelt love for people completely endears Ban to me. ♥
Anyway, after a while this total git from a different police branch turns up to help the Dekarangers with a case and he's all "ACTUALLY I'M A HIGHER RANK THAN YOU GUYS, LOL YOU SUCK" and even though they can't see the stick up his ass they're pretty sure it's there. But by this time Ban's managed to completely wear Hoji's love of life down and now he's just this miserable shell of a man feebly grumbling "please don't call me partner" when he sees Ban bounding towards him and Ban kind of wants fresh blood to annoy and so he tags along with this git with the superiority complex and refuses to just leave him alone and eventually he wears him down too and the guy decides to stay on Earth for a while, because he's kind of a masochist.
Tetsu aka Dekabreak
So yeah, Tetsu does start off as a prat who thinks he's better than everyone else but eventually Ban gets under his skin and he's forced to admit that while technically he's very talented, he lacks the sheer willpower and passion of the Dekarangers. He's actually pretty naive and innocent, quite young and under that guise of not caring about anyone or anyone, pretty sensitive. Some bad shit went down in his past and he's really not over it. He has a weird sibling-ish relationship with Umeko where he tries to use her bath when she's not around and when she finds out she usually tries to kill him, but in a loving way.
Right yes I mean Dekaranger doesn't have the big twisty plot that Gekiranger has, but I think the important thread here is the relationships between the Dekarangers. SOMEONE ON MY FLIST SAID THEY'RE LIKE A BIG FAMILY? YYY I THINK THAT'S RIGHT. They squabble and bicker a lot but they're so close to each other and it's really kind of obvious they love each other a lot. Like, with most Sentai series you get several important relationships and friendships between characters (like, say, you've got Hant and Gunpei in Go-onger and Masumi and Natsuki in Boukenger) that kind of define the entire series but then if you take two random characters (off the top of my head, let's say Abaranger's Ranru and Nakadai) you often can't get more than a few sentences about their interactions and how they feel about each other. With Dekaranger I could take any of the team members and tell you about how they feel about each other and incidences where they've shown it in quite a lot of detail. Actually I always got the impression that the Deka cast were pretty close too (like that picture above is from THIS YEAR. THIS YEAR. DEKARANGER WAS IN 2004 FTLOG) and it just gives the whole series this nice, friendly feel to it. ♥
