Lula's : A review

Apr 11, 2009 10:03

So, since going (mostly) dairy free 2 years ago, and nightshade free, I feel a LOT better. My daily stomaches are gone, my bloating is gone, etc.

However, there are things I miss sometimes. I can get great soy ice cream at my local store - but the experience of "going out for ice cream" is lost to me unless I want to subject myself to sorbet... and really. Who wants sorbet? I mean, it can be nice, but I hate that it's the only option. I can't get a cone with sorbet. Or a sorbet sundae. Or a sorbet shake. I can't have a freakin' NYC Egg Cream goddamnit, and it makes me furious sometimes. And I don't mean at home. That's different - I'm talking about being out and about and getting a treat. Two totally different things, and just as important.

Well, I thought to myself one day, "Shouldn't there be some sort of vegan ice cream parlor in a city of 8 million?" And I went to google, and LO! Google revealed unto me Lula's Sweet Apothecary, "Formulator and Dispenser of Frozen Concoctions, Entirely Natural, Vegan & Dairy Free, with Gluten Free Selections Available."

Yesterday, midnightstation and I went.

First off: It's ADORABLE. A tiny shop who's proprietor wore an old fashioned high necked blouse and black apron. Rows of candy in great big glass jars on the wall, and apothecary signs. A narrow counter with stools. And thankfully for this pregnant lady, a bathroom that was clean and available to the public.

She had both soy and nut based ice creams in, get this: INTERESTING FLAVORS. There was a spicy gingersnap, cinnamon, real strawberry, and my personal favorite: CHOCOLATE STOUT. MMM.

midnightstation had a cinnamon shake, and I had a sundae with chocolate stout ice cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, graham cracker crumbs and a choice of soy or coconut "whipped cream". @.@

I will say that the soy ice cream I get at my local store is a little creamier (So Delicious is the brand), but I was SO HAPPY to be able to sit and have a goddamn treat like a normal human being, I didn't care. And really, the ice cream is pretty creamy, just not AS creamy. The ambience more than makes up for it, as well as the fantastic and intense flavors, genial atmosphere, and wide selection. I saw they had GF cones too, and some baked goods.

If you stay and have your shake there, it comes in a Proper fountain glass, and you get a METAL STRAW with it.

Next time I want to go and share a banana split with someone.

Care to join me?
