300 and dinner

So I've been meaning to post for 2 days on the 300. We saw it Thursday. So good. Sooo good. Why so good you ask? Because it was beautiful and artistic and a classic comic book. I went in expecting a historic dramatization. But during the intro I remembered that it's a comic book adaptation. From there it just rocked.

The digitization was just right. The entire thing is a story told by one man. So the mythic elements are all acceptable and not over the top. Actually I was very happy to see that it had that drop of mythology. This is how stories get told- larger than life.

I had a total hard on during the entire movie. But not for the naked male flesh that was in every scene, (gratuitous is the word for this movie, but more on that later) no, my hard on was for the little U.S. Marine inside me that never was. I love a good fight, with honor, style, and efficiency. Ok, some people might call it ruthless viciousness, but in my mind certain things are just... efficient.

On to the gratuitous nature of the movie. Mmmmm Gerard Butler. So hard to believe he was Dracula 2000. I didn't even recognize him and I loved that bad movie. He has bulked up a ton since those days, even the Attila the Hun days. He's a good, hard working actor. You've seen him before and probably just don't know it.

The entire movie is full of actors like that, people you know you've seen, but from where? No other big names (by that I mean consistent lead roles), which helps immerse you into the story. There's no moment of "Man, Tom is actually looking normal for this role" or "Yeah, I hear Sandra's house lawsuit finally came through." The people you should hate, you hate. The people you root for... I heard someone a row back whispering at the screen "Say something," urging a character to respond to verbal attacks. Yes, it's immersive.

For those attracted to the female form, there's a droplet or two of spice for you as well. I think it was consciously done for balance. After all, wouldn't want to alienate too much of the audience with all that male flesh. Ok, I think that about covers my impressions of the movie. Oh wait, I said artistic, right? There are frames that I couldn't quite tell if it was film or a panel taken from the comic book. Very nicely done. Well done, even.

That all said, I'd like a few hours to lick Gerard Butler. But only if he uses that growly voice... oh god... I uh, have to go. More on last night's dinner later.

random, mental
