There was one scene that perfectly reflected this statement. There was a time when one of the Spartans was crouched very low and would spin in a stationary circle right, slash, spin left, stab then a few fancy moves later thrust the edge of his shield into the face of an attacker.
That kind of total advantage combat is just breath taking. Savage perhaps but not mindless or crude. Death by grace and skill can be beautiful.

I'm planning on seeing '300' next weekend in IMAX. Because you just can't watch Spartans kickin' ass in anything less than three stories of surround sound. :D
