Ok so this theory isn't one of my best but I felt it was still worth sharing. You know just to keep the community alive, lol. So my friend asked me a very interesting question regarding the Red 13 scene at the end of the game. Notice how Midgar was full of tress and looked like a splendid jungle of some sort, surrounded by beautiful blue water. After watching that scene, he has reason to believe that was indeed the Promised Land. I know Hojo said that "The Promised Land doesn't exist," but I think he was only partially correct. In my eyes, his quote was implying that Rufus' idea of the Promised Land (with all the Mako in crystallized form in a cave like area) was not real.
However, there is a chance that Midgar was the Promised Land, the entire time. There isn't much proof supporting the idea, but there is some. Let's see, I believe Midgar's creation started 50-60 years before the events of the game, meaning they tore down all of those trees and whatnot. It's important to note that the Midgar came before the ShinRa Company chose the city for their new HQ. Notice how I use the word "new." I was always under the impression that ShinRa Company was around before Midgar was thought off, but the company was nowhere near as big as it was during the game. So after making some more money, they moved to Midgar, a city that stands where the Promised Land once was.
As for who started the ShinRa Company and why Rufus and his father didn't know Midgar was the Promised Land, I have a few answers. I'd like to think Rufus' great grandfather started the ShinRa Company we know. Come on, Rufus' father isn't that old, lol. It is very hard to say if Rufus' granddad knew that Midgar replaced the Promised Land. Judging from all the energy he was draining from there, he might have had an idea. I notice that the ShinRa family are very secretive,(like Rufus being kept quiet in Junon and Rufus supplying the old AVALANCHE money behind his dad's back) so maybe before Rufus' father took over, the data regarding the Promised Land was either destroyed, or lost. This will explain why Rufus and his dad never even thought Midgar was so special. And no doubt the energy levels of Mako changed dramatically by the time Rufus was in charge, hence why he never even considered Midgar to be the Promised Land.
So that's all I have really had to say about that. Sorry if this theory isn't all that. But I'm just trying to figure out the significance of seeing Midgar covered in trees 500 years later.
