The Reason Holy Failed

Aug 22, 2006 20:14

Below is a theory I have been working on to explain why Holy failed. Keep in mind it's merely my opinion and I'm sure you have a different explanation then me, and I am looking forward to read what you have to say about this topic. With that said, let's get this topic started!

Red 13: "It’s too late for Holy. Meteor is approaching the Planet. Holy is having the opposite effect. Forget Midgar, we've gotta worry about the Planet."

Ok so I figured the best way to analyze this debate topic regarding Holy's failure was to open with a quote made by Red 13. To quickly refresh your memory, AVALANCHE figured Holy was supposed to negate Meteor and save the world. Ironically, Holy does not stop Meteor; instead it allows Meteor to pass through, after holding it off for a brief moment. In other words, Holy turned on the world and teamed up with Meteor. But the question is "why?" Why did Holy fail? Well let's take a look back to Red's quote. Notice how he says Holy is having the opposite effect. In other words, instead of Holy stopping Meteor, it teams up with it, making it even more deadly. Throughout the game, Holy was recognized for saving the Planet from the main threat. But it's important to keep in mind that Holy did indeed target the main threat, which wasn't Meteor, but humanity itself.

Bugenhagen: "Holy...the ultimate White Magic. Magic that might stand against Meteor. Perhaps our last hope to save the Planet from Meteor. If a soul seeking Holy reaches the planet, it will appear. Ho Ho Hoooo. Meteor, WEAPON, everything will disappear. Perhaps, even ourselves."

So that quote pretty much supports the idea of Holy’s unpredictable nature. This whole time, Cloud and crew looked at Meteor as the ultimate threat, but they failed to realize that humans were the enemy. How did they over look the ShinRa Company, and the millions that supported their ways? Yes Meteor and Holy damaged them all, but in the end...everything was spared, even the ShinRa Company, but I digress.

Another interesting thing to note is how Holy approached Meteor. Notice that Holy wasn't really a physical attack or anything, more like a shield. In other words, even though Holy is unpredictable, it really isn't as powerful as Bugenhagen said it was. Holy's purpose was a Meteor counter, not some all powerful magic that can wipe out anything. So the Cetra designed it in a defensive way, not an offensive.

As I mentioned in my past entry, I feel as though Meteor was summoned before. If Holy had existed before the creation of the Northern Cave, the Cetra would have used it. Therefore, we learn that Holy was designed in response to the existence of the deadly Black Materia. Again, Holy couldn't have destroyed the WEAPONS, healed the damage at the Northern Crater, or stop Jenova. It was only used to shield the planet. As for why Humanity was chosen to be taken care of over Meteor, the answer is simple. I'd like to think Meteor has hit before. Did the planet die? No it did not. It slowly began to heal itself, but Humanity's damage (example The ShinRa Company) can not be healed. Simply put, Humanity was a disease that simply needed to be cured, hence why Meteor and Holy was ready to end it all. Yes the planet would have survived, but it might not have been able to recover in it's weakened state, and it would have died years or months later. That's why the Lifestream kicked in, not to save the people, but the planet itself from such a fate The humans were simply lucky to get a second chance. The planet didn't really forgive the humans until the ending of Advent Children.

So to rap it all up, Holy technically performed its job and that’s to target the main threat. Noticing Meteor as not the threat, Holy allowed it to pass through and also gave Meteor a power boost and aided in its destructive mission. The people consider Holy a “failure” because it didn’t protect Humanity, instead it turned on it.

So I hope you liked my review. I look forward to the comments. :D
