Cloud Clone?
Before I start this entry, I just would like to welcome the new handful of members to the community. Thank you so much for joining, and I do hope you will like it here. With that said…it’s debate time!
Ok so does anybody here know allot about the Cloud clone talk within Final Fantasy 7? I’m a bit confused about the matter. I tried researching it on the internet, and I found out that there are 2 theories that many have a hard time choosing. Basically, people are debating about weather or not Cloud was or wasn’t a clone in the game. I thought he was merely a regular human being, who was then infused with Jenova cells and Mako. I once considered him a clone, seeing as how he was so easily manipulated and unstable. But then that was all due to lost memories, so nobody can really blame him. So my question today is, was Cloud a clone or a regular being (despite the enhancements) throughout the game? Thanks. :)
They say it is explained early on Disc 2 that Cloud is a failed Sephiroth clone made by Hojo, either using the body of the young Shinra trooper named Cloud Strife after he fought in Nibelheim, or by creating a brand new body. During Zack and Cloud’s getaway, the new Cloud seems to be mentally disturbed and have no personality, or emotion. Zack loans him an outfit, talks to him about becoming a mercenary, and was once a SOLDIER. The new Cloud, not having a memory or personality to talk about, convinces himself he was in SOLDIER and takes on a lot of Zack's personality, and stories.
After Zack is killed, Cloud meets Tifa in Midgar, and she starts to revive memories of the original Cloud - the one who joined the Shinra regular army after he washed out at SOLDIER and was too ashamed to go back home. Then Jenova begins to move towards the reunion, and Cloud chases clones of Sephiroth around the world throughout disc 1. But he's not really chasing anything, as Jenova explains at the altar where Aeris dies: Cloud is a puppet, a Sephiroth clone, being drawn to Reunion like all the others. This is why Sephiroth is able to control Cloud - Sephiroth isn't really "there" because he died 5 years ago (his body is in the North Cave). Regardless, Cloud regains his own memories and begins living life.
So with all that said, is this theory true? I always assumed that Cloud was his original himself the entire time, not a Sephiroth clone. He was like a vegetable in the start of the game because he was suffering from Mako poising. As for why Zack wasn’t suffering, that’s a bit of a mystery for me. Sephiroth’s ability to control Cloud was linked to the Jenova cells within him, correct? As displayed in Advent Children, Sephiroth can manipulate those with Jenova cells within them, clone or no clone. I could be wrong about Cloud not being a clone majority of the game. Jenova’s comment seemed to be one big lie, and that’s when I decided to believe that he wasn’t a clone after all, despite her words.
So…it would be really nice if somebody can explain to me if Cloud was a clone or not. I probably know the truth, but now I doubt my views.
