AO3 The first lesson is that Chuck can't leave. He won't keep Chuck captive forever, like some sort of criminal. One day, Chuck will be given almost as much freedom as he had before he was Dan's, but he has to learn a few things first.
"You can't leave, Chuck," Dan says, as he's forced, again and again, to reinforce this first, crucial lesson.
"Shaw, you don't have to do- Wait! Please, man, don't-"
The second lesson is that no one is allowed to take Chuck away from him either.
And God help anyone who tries.
"Shh," Dan soothes, as Chuck weeps into his shoulder. The sight of Chuck's bruised and bloody wrists makes Dan's voice thick. If only Chuck wouldn't fight the inevitable so hard... "I had to do it. I took your feelings into consideration... I could have killed her slowly. She deserved it, Chuck. She took Eve from me; I couldn't let her get you too."
The most important phase of Chuck's education at Dan's hands, however, will be ongoing. Today, tomorrow, next week... Dan plans to teach and teach and teach Chuck that he is Dan's to educate. To train and direct. Chuck's to take pride in Dan's pleasure with his performance. Dan gave the CIA years of his life - he gave them a spouse... The least they could do was this - was to provide him with Chuck. Someone beautiful and rare and malleable enough to mold but strong enough not to break.
It takes Chuck time to accept Dan's tutelage. To test his limits less and explore the new parameters of his existence. The Important thing is that Chuck gets there, learns his place.
Dan doesn't teach Chuck to enjoy it. The payoff of all Dan's efforts... Is that Chuck learns to like it on his own.
