Give it a shot.

Most times, Johnny’s a man of his word… Yeah, he was a liar. A hustler. But he never wanted to be - and even when he was, he liked to save those things for the table.

There are only two things Johnny can’t keep a straight story on everywhere else. The Game…

And Danny.

Johnny would break the freakin’ Geneva Conventions for Danny and everyone knows it. For once in his life, standing outside of Joe’s shadow, John understands why the old man used to smile at Danny kinda funny - talk about “liabilities”, weaknesses. All Johnny knew then was that he didn’t like it.

Now he hates it. Hates Joe. Wants him dead in a way that should be goddamned scary because Johnny’s never wanted anything and not meant it.

Danny’s face is a mess of bruises and blood. Johnny’s fingers are red and sticky with it - inspecting Dan’s busted lip, his swollen eye; cradling Danny’s face between his hands and just holding him, ‘cause he’s not sure what else to do without Joe here to pound into a stain on the pavement.

“Shit… Shit, Danny…”

“I know... Jesus. I know!” Danny can’t stay still. He’s all but vibrating in front of Johnny - adrenaline and fear and (God, please) hopefully nothing else. “I didn’t know what to- He had a gun to my head, Johnny. I didn’t-”

It’s stupid. It’s the stupidest possible time to go breaking even more promises to himself, but Johnny plants his lips on top of Danny’s to shut him up. Kisses him softly - more softly than Johnny’s ever kissed anyone, even girls. Which is almost funny, cause Johnny’s hardest kisses have been with Dan too. Pissed off or panicked, usually, hence the (broken) promises.

It’s like flipping a switch. Danny’s nerves power down and Johnny’s heart goes into overtime.

“I’m fucked.” Danny’s words are barely there and his hands are like clamps on Johnny’s arms, and Johnny doesn’t even want to think of being let go.

“I’ll figure it out,” Johnny says automatically and hates himself for the little flinch Danny can’t hide whenever Johnny tells him something important. ‘Cause Johnny’s lied about enough important shit to Danny not to be trusted. Lied to protect Danny. From himself, from-

This. Running his tongue, light like a whisper, over the split in Danny’s lip. Tasting blood and Danny’s whimper - Johnny doesn’t bother telling himself it’s all about pain. If there’s one thing Danny’s always made clear and honest, it’s that he wants this… this thing between them more than Johnny can handle.

“We’ll figure this shit out,” Johnny repeats, because he needs Danny to believe him now more than ever. He’s never wanted to lie to his brother. Has only ever lied because Danny is his brother. His family. The one good thing he doesn’t need a rich girlfriend or a good aim to get. The only good thing, really.

“I promise.” Johnny’s gonna be a man of his word this time - if it kills him.
