Ok went for a drive tonight and managed to :
see glow worms & bats
come across a midnight party in the middle of nowhere
witness what might have been an occult ceremony
befriend a horse
overtake a dude driving fully asleep and in the rear vision mirror watch him crash off the highway
Out of all of these only the glow worms were deliberate - the whole point of the drive was to try to get a shot of the glow worms at midnight from inside the cave facing out with glow worms in the foreground, waterfall and moonlit stream running out the cave in the background. Didn't end up getting a decent shot at all but it certainly was an interesting night - I'd blame it all on the full moon only apparently that was last night, right now the moon it seems is only 98% full, just wonder what I might have seen if I went for a drive last night!
When I pulled up to the natural arch at about 11:30pm there were surprisingly a few cars there and a bunch of teenagers drinking and generally having a good time. They were in good spirits when I walked past them and even volunteered some helpful advice on which walking track to take to get to the natural arch the quickest.
Glow worms were...well...glowing, wasn't really expecting the bats though, they were a cool addition.
Occult ceremony was on my walk out from the natural arch. The party of teens had been replaced by a bunch of girls sitting around a ring of candles with something in the middle of them, looked somewhat like a dead animal but that was most likely my imagination and I didn't particularly want to get close enough to find out for sure...
Horse wandered over to me for a pat & head scratch when I stopped by the side of the road to see if there might be a nice shot of the valley from the side of the highway. He just walked right up to me and stuck his head over the fence then looked at me pleadingly with those huge dopey horsey eyes. I had no choice but to give him some pats & scratches.
Sleeping driver was the strangest, was driving home when this ute a bit in front of me just suddenly swerved straight across 3 lanes, then jerked back the other way and fishtailed. I immediately hit the brakes and waited for him to pull off the road, but he didn't, he just got back under control and kept on driving at a slowish pace, I didn't really want to get next to him as I didn't want one of those swerves into my car so I hung behind him for a bit. He continued to drive slow so after a bit I overtook him (with 2 lanes between us just in case). Couldn't believe my eyes as I went past him because his head was drooped forward almost resting on the steering wheel - the fucker was dead asleep. Just after I got past him I watched in the rear vision mirror as he started to wander across lanes of the highway, then he must have woken up again because once again there was a sharp swerve one way, then the overcompensation back the other that actually resulted in his car not just fishtailing but spinning around so that I could see his tail lights. Once again he just backed up and continued driving. Now at this point I was a little worried for him and for anyone that might overtake him and take one of those swerves into them so I slowed right down so I was a bit in front of him trying to work out if there was any way I could make him pull over. I decided there really wasn't anything I could do without putting myself in harms way and then saw once again the same jerk/fistail combo, this time fishtailing both ways a couple times and ending up running off the highway and bumping into the left hand side guard rail with car at 90 degrees to the road.
There was no way he would have been hurt, he hit the rail at quite a low speed (washed it all off in the fishtails) and I'd had enough - if he kept on driving then he deserved to die as far as I was concerned, idiot. Besides if I had of seen him definitely pull over I probably would have pulled over myself, gone back and punched the fucker in the head - shit like that can kill people. So I just sped up and pissed off, didn't see whether he got back into it for a fourth go or took a nap. I just can't believe he fell asleep twice, both resulting in fishtailing all over the highway and both times just went straight back to driving. I seriously hope the third time he decided to grab a bit of shuteye.
People are idiots.
Still it was a pretty cool night all said and done - quite quirky.
