Checking out Torchwood

I've been watching the first season of Torchwood on and off. I was looking forward to it, since Capn Jack was so much fun with the Ninth Dr on Who.

I am halfway through the season, and my overall impression is that Capn Jack is a terrible leader stuck with horrible, untrustworthy incompetents. He also seems strangely negligent - there are absolutely NO repercussions concerning Suzie in the first episode! I am assuming Torchwood Cardiff is the sad remnant of a remnant of Torchwood proper, consisting of people who survived the Cybermen from New Who S2 finale. This miniscule group must have worked together for a while, yet no one talks about how they feel knowing they shared labspace with a serial killer? Or mulled over how their occupation warped her? Owen brings home alien tech twice in a row and receives no punishment? I loathe Owen, his use of Alien Axe spray solidified him as disgusting in my mind. And he looks like a sick frog. Tosh is just there as the resident nerd and Gwen vacillates between competent and brain dead coffee girl. The only employee that I can like at all is Ianto, and that is mainly because is adorable. He doesn't seem to have a purpose beyond secretary and snacks, but at least he doesn't steal alien tech ...

And then comes Cyberwoman. Or should I say, KOS-MOS. Why the hell is she wearing a metal bikini and spike heels? The Cybermen remove gender during the process! And how the hell could Ianto keep her hidden for so long?! This episode is the low point so far, and seemed to merely establish that Jack should fire everyone and start from scratch.

As for Jack himself? He is somehow immortal, and seems jaded. I do not know how he escaped from the Game Show and met up with Torchwood. He doesn't seem to be reveling in his immortality, which I find odd, considering Jack's former ebullient personality. He's also very detached. Perhaps his hands-off zero management stems from being a conman himself. Maybe he assumes people will be their worst so there is no point trying. I have no idea.

I did like that he apparently visits his exes over the decades. That delicate hug he gave to elderly Estelle was very poignant. This is a very sharp contrast to the Doctor, who notoriously cuts off his Companions permanently.

Then Gwen hooks up with Owen. Excuse me while I go puke. EW EW EW EW EW
