Silence is Golden

“Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us without words?”

He liked to howl, to announce to the world that all was right with the world. Sometimes her hair would stand on end and other times she blushed bright red when he lifted his head to the heavens and made a sound that echoed off the clouds. Very rarely she would join him, adding her much less powerful voice to the sound.

Once she'd told him she liked listening to the sound of the wind through the high green leaves and she would tease him by making him sit and listen to them with her. He tried not to be impatient about it, but she could tell it made him a little crazy. This of course only made her sit there longer until he put his wet nose against some sensitive spot and made her jump.

For the first time she really understood his urge to howl. Talking to Orla had been constrained by being on the telephone and by his being in the next room. She wanted to scream, to howl to the moon, to fall to her knees and thank God in prayers she barely remembered. All because she didn't want to raise her voice while he was taking a piss.
