As a hatter

She slept very little between leaving with Yevgeni and arriving in Ireland. What sleep she got was troubled or remarkably light. At first she convinced herself it was because she was look after the boy. She had to be vigilant with another life under her charge. Particularly when she had no real idea if they would take him in.

Once that was settled, there was Jacob to face. The idea of telling him she was sorry and saying goodbye had hurt too badly to let her sleep well. She'd accepted it. Smelling him on the bedding had helped, but nothing would be the same as sleeping beside him.

And then he was on her in the woods, asking her if she was his even as he entered her. She wasn't even sure what he meant at first she had been so certain he was done with her. Learning that he still loved her as much as she did him left her dizzy with joy.

Minutes later he'd given her one more piece of information she still hadn't completely absorbed. She wasn't sure she ever would given how they met. He would always be Father Jacob to her. So much to adjust to in such a short period.

She stood in the doorway watching him dress, thinking this must be how madness felt. He turned to smile at her and she decided if this was madness, she was happy to be mad. It was so much better than all the other ways to do it.
