Lies Ma told me

Feb 17, 2008 13:23

Ma always told me that God would be with me wherever I went. She said if I tried, even a little, I'd be able to reach him with my prayers and he'd hold me in the palm of his hand like the sparrows. She was forever showing me little signs that God had favored her in a day.

God doesn't sit there watching our every move, listen to our every prayer and pat us on the head when we've done well. He doesn't care that much. Instead he comes to us at the moment we're made, gives us what he thinks we'll need to survive, then lets us go forth. If we're really messing up, he might send us a reminder.

Ma would be hurt to hear me talk this way, but she's not seen the things I have. She never left our village for more than a few days at a time in her whole life. One of those trips was her honeymoon and that was only spent in Galway. She never saw the poverty and fear I saw in Boston.

I'll never know her as a wolf or if she saw the ghosts, too. I'll only ever know that what she told me about God was wrong. He's left me behind more than once on the way to seeing his plans are carried out.
