Impossible

She could see the walls of the shack through the boy's body. He was there, within reach if she could have gotten her hands free, but still she could see right though him. With everything else going on around her, she wondered at her ability to question his existence. Her whole world was shattering, but he still could not be real.

And then he changed. That sad, beautiful child's face turned into the face of a beast. Years later she would look back and see the same beauty in the long snout and soft fur, but at that moment all she could see was madness. A child did not turn into a wolf. Ghosts did not exist outside her mother's fairy tales.

Of course, there was no way her father would chain her in a shack to be raped, either, so clearly her view of what was possible or impossible was flawed.
