As soon as the jumper had landed, they had been greeted by a grumpy Ronon, tired of waiting for them. Behind his apparent frustration, Elisabeth could sense his worry. Rodney had made the situation perfectly clear to all of them. They could not waste anymore time. They had to act quickly or their friends would be lost forever.
They had trekked through the forest, Ronon leading the way, Rodney on his heels, surprisingly fast and... not complaining ! Elisabeth was pleased and a little impressed by the scientist's radical change of attitude this year. Of course, he was still arrogant and condescending most of the time, it was part of his (charming?) personality. But the siege on Atlantis and his frequent field trips through the gate with Colonel Sheppard's team had revealed his true nature.
It was in adversity that you could mesure the real strengh and courage of a person. All the military personnel of the base were dedicated soldiers and Elisabeth had noted that their irreproachable attitude and code of honor had rubbed off on the scientists. Well... Not all of them. For some obscure reasons, some people put up resistance and didn't seem to grasp the whole meaning of the expedition. But she was not going to give names... really... it would not be professional and worthy of a leader (starting with a K. and rubbing her up the wrong way!).
« Elisabeth, Dear » interrupted Carson with his usual thick Scottish accent, « Can you understand the inscriptions carved into the rock ? ». He was sitting very far from the entrance of the cave and did not seem comfortable. The poor Doctor had been forced out of his lab and was not very eager to walk through the forceshield. It was understandable but they needed him in case Teyla and John were in need of medical attention.
« This is a welcome and a warning, to anyone that seek ascension » she told him, « It seems the field was designed as a Sanctuary from the wraith. A place the last of the Ancients could ascend without fear of attack ».
« Of course » Rodney exclaimed, « they could spend lifetimes inside the field before the wraith discovered it ».
« And what's the warning ? » interrupted Ronon.
Elisabeth's attention returned to the wall as she read « That once you cross the threshold, there's no return ». Carson's pale face became distorted. Elisabeth took pity of him and gave him a reassuring smile.
Totally ignorant of his friend's nervousness and typing furiously on his laptop, Rodney commented on her traduction « That is unless you have the location of the power source and the expertise to turn it off ». He paused and looked up from his computer, a big smile on his face « we may even get a ZPM out of this ».
Elisabeth smiled back at him and from the corner of her eye, she could see Ronon moving towards them, ready for action « Now you're talking », he said. Rodney returned his attention on the program he was running « Calm down, Chewy » he said sarcastically, « It may take awhile for us to go through the forceshield ».

Sleep would not come, tonight. Peering at the ceiling above him, listening to the hooting of the local owl, John kept replaying the day in his head, over and over again, as if to convince himself that he was not dreaming.
Thinking back to his last base of operation on earth, in Antarctica, when he thought that he had run out of luck and seriously considering leaving the military. Then, General O'Neill had arrived at the base and John had escorted him to a secret facility in the middle of nowhere, buried under the ice. From there, it had all been a blurr. It was as if he had been swallowed into an other dimension. Well, it was not far from the truth. Not a dimension, but a whole new galaxy. As scary as it was, it brought a new excitement and purpose to his life.
Exploring the universe, traveling to new worlds... General O'Neill was right, it would have been crazy to pass up this opportunity ». Luck had not abandonned him, after all. It had even led him to Athos and this beautiful warrior princess, turning his world upside down.
John turned his head to the left, to the subject of his insomnia. Teyla was lying on her side, her back to him, probably sleeping. From the very begining, he had seen something in her. Strengh and wisdom. No wonder her people had made her their leader. She was challenging and combative but also showed empathy for others. And like Elisabeth, she was particulary skilled in negociations. It had been easy to fall in love with her.
He had asked her to join his team right away, not even consulting Elisabeth first. Of course, there were the obvious reasons of new friendship and collaboration between two people, her knowledge of this galaxy and the potential connexions with other worlds. But if he was honest with himself, there had been a selfish part of him that wanted to keep her close to him.
He had never entertained the idea of a tangible romantic relationship, though. Not until six months ago, when life had isolated them from the outside world, forcing them to face their hidden feelings. What if Teyla had released the hold she had on him, what if he had been stuck here all by himself ? Would have they acted on their feelings and confessed their love to one another ? John doubted it. Life in Atlantis left no room for romance. There was this constant threat above their heads, wraith, Genii and god knows what else waited for them out there. And that was what scared him. They both had busy schedules and high responsabilities. What if their work kept them apart, what if something happened to one of them ? He had always questioned himself on bringing Teyla to his team. Would she be safer with her people ? On the other hand, she could have been exposed to the wraith while trading food on other worlds, she could have contracted a disease or been killed by some animal while hunting with her people... All these probabilities were giving him a headache. McKay would certainly have a theory on the subject. His attention returned to his friend, fairly confident that he would not give up on them. Something must have happened and he sincerly hoped that both Rodney and Ronon were alright.
Movement from the left brought him back to reality. The moon's light was piercing through the open window, diffusing its soft beams into the cabin. From his bed, John heard the frustrated sigh of his partner and he smiled, realising that she couldn't sleep either.
It had been a very intense and emotional day. They had both discussed it openly, which was new to him... and quite liberating. They had expressed their love for one another, and also their fears. He still could not believe she returned his affections. When he had asked her, she had told him that she saw his strenghs when he only saw his weaknesses. If he though he could not love her more, he was wrong. She was an amazing woman. And he was definitly a lucky man. What were the odds of falling in love with a woman from another galaxy ?
As if sensing his attention on her, Teyla moved again, fussing with the covers a brief moment, then turning on her other side, facing John this time. She met his eyes and smiled.
« Can't sleep ? » he asked, unable to take his eyes off her. She shook her head and sighed again. Her eyes were almost pleading and he gladly took the bait « Wanna come over ? ». He saw her bite her lower lip, her smile growing wider. « Yes, please » she whispered. John chuckled, amused by her eagerness. He moved a little to give her space and set the covers aside « Come here ».
Teyla did not waste time and got up. She was wearing that lovely white nightdress that was floating around her small form. He had to wonder if she was an angel sent out for him. He lifted his left arm, inviting her by his side and she cuddled against him, her head resting on his shoulder and her left arm crossing his middle.
Suddenly, everything fell into place. Her presence by his side was an evidence and he had no intention to spend another night apart from her. Tomorrow, he would ask her if he could move his bed next to hers. And by the way she was clutching at him, he had a fairly good idea of her answer.
He realised that he was still smiling like a smitten teenager « Better ? » he asked. Teyla buried her head into his neck « Much better » she said in a sleepy voice. Holding her tight, John pressed a gentle kiss on her temple. He knew life was not perfect but for now, he was content.

They were all gathered for lunch, the sun bathing them with its bright beams. It was a good day, Avrid thought. Every one was enjoying the moment, listening to John's funny stories. He had also noticed the change in Teyla and John's spirits. Their souls were brighter, at peace at last. And he had a pretty good idea of the reasons for this change.
He had witnessed their interaction yesterday, on his way to their training area. He had not wanted to intrude on their privacy and had turned on his heel. But he had seen the perfect match of their souls, melting together as they were wrapped up in eachother's arms, their love shining. It was a beautiful sight. He was very happy for his friends.
They had disappeared from the camp that morning and skipped lunch, although Avrid suspected that they had sneaked into their food supply while he was meditating with his fellow comrades. He understood their need for privacy. And considering their conflicted emotions and tormented souls these past few months, he guessed that they had a lot to discuss.
Hetta's giggles brought him back to the conversation. John was talking about the weather, it seemed. Avrid focused his mind on the discussion. « Haven't any of you seen thunderstorms ? » John was asking. Avrid thought his parents had mentioned it but he had never experienced it « The Sanctuary provides rain for the orchards », he said. Teyla smiled politely at him « and we are very fortunate for this mild weather ». Avrid nodded his approuval.
« I'm talking about thunder and lightening » John continued, « giant bolts of electricity shooting down from the sky ».
« It sounds scary » Hetta complained. She was seated between John and Teyla, her attention solely focused on the story, forgetting her meal.
« Yes it is, sweetheart » Teyla approuved. She leaned into Hetta's personal space and lowered her voice in a conspiratorial voice « and I don't know why John is so obsessed with it ». His sister giggled and John smiled, glancing at his partner.
« Well, it is scary, but it's also very cool », John said. He lightly pushed his elbow into Hetta's shoulder « It's okay to be scared. It's part of life. You know, when I was a kid, we used to have storms that shook the house. Scared me to death ».
Teira joined the conversation, all sadness gone « When we are ascended, we'll experience such things ».
« If you're ascended » John replied, « you can make thunderstorms. I'm talking about actually experiencing life ».
Avrid's life was full and he was content « We contemplate on the experience that is life each day » he said, « but to ascend, one must meditate ».
« You're not meditating, you're hiding » John protested. His sentence died in a muffled sound. He winced, looking at Teyla who was giving him a severe look.
« Hiding from what ? » Avrid asked, confused.
« He means the beast » Teira told him.
Realisation hit him. He understood now the frustration of his new friend but as he had told him before, violence was not the path to ascension.
« Forgive John's baldness » Teyla said, « you have been very kind to us. You invited us here and shared your meals with us. For that, we are grateful ». She paused, looking at her companion « But John is right. We cannot fight the beast alone ».
« You're not alone » Teira interrupted.
John nodded « I know, you were out there too ». Teira shook her head « No, I mean your friends have come. Four people. They've come for you ».
Everyone was quiet suddenly, processing the information. John and Teyla shared an hopeful look. They could barely contain their excitement.
« They have ? Are you sure ? » John asked, bemused. He was already standing up « That's the best news I've heard ». Teyla stood up as well, ready to leave.
« Wait, I sense something more » Teira said, her eyes unfocused, concentrated on her vision « The beast is nearly upon them » she warned.
Alarmed, John and Teyla left without a word, concern showing on their faces.
« We can not let them face it alone » Teira said, « it makes sense that the beast is the final test to reach ascension. Remember the attack within the cloister, John and Teyla have been hurt but when I confronted it, it disappeared ». His sister stood up « It makes sense. This is our burden, not theirs ».
Avrid agreed with her, it did make sense. But he was not reassured. After a moment, he nodded « They are brave people. They did not hesitate to risk their lives to save ours ». He stood up as well, smiling at his sister « We must help them and face the beast ».

Here he was again on babysitting duty. But this time, it was not only McKay he had to watch over. He had three doctors to protect, neither of them able to fight and among them the leader of Atlantis. Ronon sighed heavily. He really started to miss Teyla and Sheppard.
Hopefully, they would find them soon. If only they would stop talking and walk faster ! He cleared his head and returned his focus on the tracks in front of him, listening carefully around him, disregarding the doctors' animated discussion.
At first look, it seemed to be a quiet place with no apparent threat. After all, it was supposed to be a sanctuary. But during all these years on the run, fighting for his life, Ronon had learned that apparences can be deceptive. And the meadow they were walking into right now left no protection, no place to hide from a potential attack. They needed to fasten the pace and reach the tree line. That's what Sheppard and Teyla would have done.
His thoughts wandered a brief moment on his two best friends. They were both decent warriors, capable of holding their own in a fight. They had strong survival instincts and it was evident that they had eachother's back. But it didn't stop him from worrying about them. If he had heard McKay correctly, it had been about six months for Shep and Teyla. A lot could have happened in six months. Maybe they had lost hope for a potential rescue, maybe they had walked further into the mountains, searching for a way to leave this place. In that case, they were way ahead of them and it would take them days or weeks to find them.
Something suddenly caught his attention, interrupting his thoughts. He froze, listening intensly. Behind him, the doctors had stopped as well. « What's wrong ? » asked Dr. Weir. Ronon remained still, scanning the horizon « I heard something », he said simply.
« What did you hear ? » insisted McKay, « was it a human voice or a bird, or a... an animal's growl ?
« Sssh » Ronon hushed him. It all seemed quiet but something was off, he was certain of it « It's near » he stated, retrieving his gun from his belt. And all of a sudden, appearing from nowhere, a giant beast materialized, half cloaked and ready to attack them.
From the corner of his eye, he could see McKay and the Doc stepping bravely in front of their leader, protecting her. They raised theirs guns, ready to fire. Ronon took a shot at the beast but it didn't seem to have any effect on it. He shot it again, with the same result. « Fire ! » he ordered the two doctors, hoping their bullets would be more efficient. Complying, they emptied their charger, throwing everything at the beast. But it didn't buldge.
« What the hell ?! » he thought. It was time for plan B. « Make a run for the forest, I'll cover you » Ronon said, grabbing his knife.
« We're not letting you fight this beast alone » came McKay's surprising answer. Despite his constant whinning, McKay was a brave man and Ronon was very proud of his team mate right now.
« McKay, you're the only one able to get us out of his place. So you take the good doctors here with you and you get the hell out of here ! » he ordered. There was no room for discussion « I'll distract it and I'll get back to you », he added in a hurry. « Now, go ! ».
He threw himself at the beast, stabbing it with all his strengh. In record time, the thing sent him flying away and he crashed violently on the gound. His vision blurred for a second. Then he heard footsteps running in his direction. Turning his head, he saw with great relief Sheppard and Teyla coming to his rescue. They jumped at the beast's throat and suddenly, it disappeared and they fell loudly on the grass.
« Aoutch » Sheppard complained while standing up. Ronon was so happy to see them « Excellent timing » he said. Teyla was standing up as well. Behind his friends, he could see the three doctors cautiously approaching them.
« What the hell took you so long ?! » Sheppard exclaimed. Ronon understood his frustration. In his position, he would have been pissed off.
« Believe it or not, you were only gone a couple of hours » Dr. Weir said, joining the conversation.
« Try six months ! » John replied.
McKay stepped in « You're trapped in a time dilation field ».
Teyla and Sheppard looked at eachother with a confused expression « What is a time dilation field ? » Shep asked.
Ronon glanced at Teyla and recognized her expression. She had sensed something. The beast was still here.
« Can we talk about it some place else ? » Dr. Weir asked. Unfortunatly, there was no time for discussion. Teyla shook her head « No. It is still close », she said.
The beast appeared suddenly, confirming Teyla's statement. Ronon walked slowly to it, his friends by his side « You fought this thing before ? » he asked.
« Twice » Sheppard told him. Ronon bent down and grabbed the knife that had fallen on the ground during the fight « How did you beat it ? ». Sheppard made a face « still haven't figured that out ». Well, that was not promising.
« John ? Friends of yours ? » Elisabeth asked, concern in her voice. Ronon turned around and saw a group of people heading their way. He stepped back and watched them carefully. Sheppard and Teyla didn't seem to mind the intrusion. So he relaxed a little. They walked to the beast, surrounding it. A man stepped out of the group « We have come to stand with you... whatever happens ». John nodded at him and Teyla smiled. These people were definitly friendly.
« No, we've come to fight » said a woman behind him. She looked at the beast « and we are not afraid of you ». She glanced briefly at John, before returning her attention on the creature « the beast is of our own creation. And it is long past time we sent it away ». The young man joined her and took her hand.
Confused, Ronon watched the group surrounding the beast, focused and determined but surprisingly calm. They were not warriors, their wardrobe was very simple. Probably villagers. He also noticed a little girl among them. How could they let a child face a terrible beast ? He glanced at his friends but it didn't seem to concern them. They certainly knew something he didn't, so he trusted them and stood still. The beast growled one last time before disappearing completely. And suddenly, a glow surrounded the villagers.
« That's it ? That's all it took ? » asked Sheppard, bemused.
The woman stepped in « You were right, John. We were afraid. The beast was the final burden we had to shed manifest from our own fears. You gave us the courage to face it ».
The little girl walked to Teyla and John, a smile on her face « Goodbye », she said simply. John ruffled her hair and winked « Bye, sweety. Take care ». She nodded and turned her attention on Teyla, who was kneeling in font of her « don't forget Nalla » she told her very seriously. Teyla smiled, brushing the girl's hair in a tender gesture « I will take good care of her, do not worry ».
Ronon was caught up in the moment. He saw the raw emotions barely contained on his friends' faces. Six months spent with these people, this little girl in particular. He knew Teyla had a strong maternal instinct. He also knew that kids loved John. It was nice to see their softer side, for a change. They were always in control, hiding their emotions. This little retreat may have been a good thing, after all.
As he watched the little girl walking back to the group of villagers, he wondered who was this Nalla. Did they leave someone behind ? No, it would be cruel. Maybe the name of a pet ? Wait, did Teyla agree to take care of her pet ? He sincerly hoped it was not a goat.
« There will be no need to destroy the Sanctuary, Dr. McKay » the woman said, interrupting his thoughts. How did she knew his name ? Did ascended beings really could get into people's heads ? It was a disturbing thought.
« What ? No, no, no. I wasn't thinking that » McKay defended himself « I was... »
« We'll keep the portal open until you are gone » the woman interrupted, her tone leaving no room for discussion. And yet...
« At which point the ZPM, which undoubtefully powers this place... » continued an oblivious McKay.
« The Sanctuary was left by those who came before us, for those who may seek it out and follow the path. And it will continue to remain after you are gone ».
Even Ronon knew that arguing with an ascended being was not wise.
« Yeah, but... » begged weakly the scientist, glancing at Dr. Weir, who gave him a pointed look in return.
« Absolutely » he said finally, giving up.
Then the glow intensified and Ronon watched, bemused, as their bodies desintegrated into golden specks and elevated into the sky, vanishing into thin air. « What the hell ? » he said outloud. He returned his attention on his friends. Sheppard was looking at him with an extra twinkle in his eyes and Ronon was immediatly suspicious « What ? » he asked.
« Nothing » Sheppard responded, a smile on his face. He then addressed to the group « We started to think that you forgot us ». Teyla nodded « we were quite worried about you », she added.
Dr. Beckett had remained silent during the all exchange. He took a step forward, more confident now that the threat was gone « and we were quite worried about you too. Are you both alright ? »
« We're fine, Doc » Sheppard answered, « we had a personal healer in the camp, it came in handy a couple of times ». He looked at Teyla and smiled at her. She smiled back at him and nodded. The way her eyes lingered on Sheppard, the way he maintained her gaze a fraction too long ; Ronon knew instantly that something had changed. He didn't know what had happened these past six months. Maybe facing the beast together had strenghened their bond. Maybe all this time spent side by side had allowed them to know eachother better. They seemed relaxed enough.
« We're sorry we didn't get here sooner » Dr. Weir apologized.
« We could have been here sooner if some people didn't take so long to pack » McKay interrupted, his eyes drifting to Beckett. The wise doctor just sighed and shook his head.
« And we could have found them sooner if you would have shut up and walked faster » Ronon replied, unable to resist the opportunity to tease his team mate.
« Can't believe I'm gonna say this but... I kind of missed it... a little » John interrupted them, before McKay could anwser.
« Well, you'll quickly change your mind, my friend » Carson said, sarcastic.
« I don't know... spending six months with people that do nothing but meditate... » Sheppard looked at Teyla, a wide grin on his face « If Teyla had not been here with me, I would have gone completely insane ! ». Everybody laughed.
« Let's get out of here » Ronon said, eager to return home.
« Ronon wait » said Teyla, « we have some personal effects that we would like to take with us ». She looked at Dr. Weir « If it's alright with you ». Elisabeth smiled kindly « Of course ». She added then, mischivious « As long as Nalla is not a goat ».

« So it's where you've been living for the past six months ? » asked Rodney, his eyes scanning the place. On their way back to the cloister, he had explained to John and herself the strange mechanism of the Sanctuary and the difference in the passing of time. It was really hard to believe that only two hours had passed outside of the field, when they had spent six full months living and breathing into the cloister.
« Yep » John answered, « I mean at first, we would be gone for days, walking in every direction, searching for a way out » he added. « Then eventually, we settled here ».
Teyla walked to the table, where they were all gathered only minutes ago. Now it seemed too quiet. There were no more laughs, no more animated conversation. Plates, cutlery and full baskets of vegetables remained untouched. They needed to clear the place, she thought, for those that would come after them.
She began to clear the table, piling the plates on one side, as Rodney kept rambling on « … so basically, nothing to do, no wifi, not a single sign of civilisation ? Oh boy, I would have gone crazy here ! » he exclaimed.
Teyla heard Elisabeth's soft chuckle beside her and she realised that she had joined her at the table and was helping her clearing it « Are you alright ? » she asked, concern in her voice. Teyla smiled at her friend. She was a very perceptive woman and she must have seen her sadness. Not that she was disappointed to leave the place. She was very excited to return to Atlantis, to see her people again. It was just so sudden and she and John had spent so much time here, in this bubble, isolated from the outside world. They had shared so much. Now that the bubble was open, she was afraid of watching all these good memories evaporate in thin air and going back to her previous life like nothing had happened.
« I am fine » she said simply, her eyes searching for her partner. John was listening to Rodney's monologue but his eyes were solely focused on her and the second she looked at him, she had the reassurance she needed. They shared a knowing smile.
« All right » said Elisabeth, « why don't you go and grab your personal effects while we clear the table here ? ». Teyla returned her attention on the woman and realised that Dr. Beckett had joined them. They were looking at her in a strange way.
« You don't have to do this, Elisabeth. Really, it's fine ».
Dr. Beckett pushed her gently away from the table « It's no problem at all, Dear » he told her, « we understand that it must be difficult to leave this place. You've been living here for six months and you were probably thinking that rescue would never come. It was your home ». She really did miss Carson's wise insights... and his funny accent too. « Thank you » she said, smiling at him.
« Hey Sheppard ! » Ronon's deep voice echoed through the empty camp. They all turned around. He was standing in the middle of their training area, a pair of bantos in his hand. « Is it where Teyla kicked your ass ? ». Everyone chuckled, except John, who pretended to be hurt.
« Teyla, has Sheppard improved, at least ? » Ronon said. She was about to answer him but John spoke first « Well, I've won at least once » he said, looking at her with a mischivious smile. She felt her cheeks flush at the memory. « If I recall correctly, you were cheating », she said back to him.
« mmm... Of course » commented Rodney. John rolled his eyes at him and shouted back at Ronon « would you mind bringing back our bantos, please ? I guess nobody's gonna need it, here ».
Teyla let the boys at the well and climbed up the stairs to their cabin. She stopped on the last step. Nalla was sat against the doorframe, where Hetta had left her a few hours ago. Teyla bent down and picked her up, admiring her beautiful dress for a second.
Then she stepped through the open door and stopped in the middle of the room, trying to memorize every detail. She sighed, the doll held tight to her chest. All these nights sleeping in the same room, John's comforting presence by her side. Now they were going back to Atlantis, sleeping in their own quarters. They would definitly need time to readjust to the city's frenzy but she was not sure that she would be able to sleep well, apart from him.
« Hey » John whispered behind her, startling her. She had not noticed his approach, lost in her thoughts.
« Sorry » he said, his hand brushing against her arm lightly « I didn't mean to startle you ». She smiled, turning to face him « It's all right ». John's eyes fell on the doll « I see you've found Nalla » he said, smiling back at her. She nodded. They remained silent a brief moment, staring at eachother.
« Ready to go home ? » John asked her. She sighed, overwhelmed by emotion. « I don't know » she whispered. She felt his warm hand on her neck, a carress to her soul « Teyla » he said, his eyes boring into hers, « whatever happens next, no matter how hard things get, I know we're gonna pull through ». Teyla nodded, her eyes watering. « I don't care if my superiors frown on us. Life is too short and I want to spend the rest of it with you by my side ».
Her throat thick with emotions, unable to form a coherent sentence, she just leaned into him and buried her face into his chest. She felt his strong arms wrapping her up into a tight embrace. She inhaled slowly, enjoying the moment. He was right, together they were stronger and they could not deny their feelings anymore.
« I knew it ! » Ronon's loud voice made them jump apart. Teyla's heart was racing.
« Hey buddy, you might want to moderate your enthousiasm, next time » John said, a hand on his chest « because I nearly had a heart attack ».
The Satedan did not bother to respond. Instead, he walked right at them, a big smile on his face. He hugged them very tight, growling loudly.
« Oh... ok » came John's muffled voice. « You know, at some point, we're gonna need to breathe ». Teyla couldn't help but laugh, despite the discomfort of the hug.
« What's all the fuss about ? » asked Rodney from the threshold. Dr. Beckett and Elisabeth were standing behind him, alarmed.
Finally, Ronon let go of them. He patted John on the shoulder « That's about time » he said.
At a loss of words, Teyla tried to hide her discomfort but it was very difficult to regain some composure when four pair of eyes were staring at you.
« What are you talking about ? » Rodney said, « why are you shouting like a cave man ?! ». Then he looked behind her and suddenly, his eyes widdened. She followed his gaze and realised that he was staring at their joined beds. John had suggested to move his bed next to hers this morning and they had made some arrangements to their new home.
« What ? How ? I mean... you two ? » Rodney stuttered. Teyla bit her lips, looking at John with pleading eyes. Curiously, he seemed really calm and even amused by Rodney's reaction.
« I think we're busted » he said to her, smiling.
Teyla chuckled. John always found a way to lighten the mood. She glanced behind Rodney with apprehension to judge her friends's reaction. She was surprised to see smiles on their faces.
« This is your home sweet home, then ? » said Dr. Beckett, his eyes taking into the room « this is quite lovely ». Teyla didn't know if she should say something or justify herself maybe. But they didn't ask any questions and she decided to let it go.
« Well, we'll leave you alone. You have some packing to do » said Elisabeth, tactful. She left the cabin, Carson on her heels. Ronon patted John on the back one last time, before dragging Rodney out. The scientist was still in shock it seemed, and at a loss of words for a change.
John sighed beside her and she looked at him « That went well » he said, teasing her. She smiled « Indeed. They did not seem surprised », she noted.
« Well, except for McKay » John replied and she laughed.
Looking behind her, she tried to remember where she had left her backpack. She walked past John, her hand lingering on his chest for a brief moment, and headed to their beds. Kneeling in front of it, she reached for her bags. They gathered their empty weapons, knives and some pieces of clothing.
« Let's go » John told her, reaching for her hand. She entertwined her fingers with his and followed him outside. The team was waiting for them.
« So, I guess this is Nalla » Elisabeth said, looking at the doll in Teyla's hand.
« Yes, it is » Teyla confirmed, sharing a smile with Elisabeth « and she's coming home with us ».

The air was fresh tonight. He could sense the electricity emanating from the storm. Flashes of light were illuminating the sky in the distance, moving slowly towards the city. John rested his elbows on the balcony's guard rail, watching the movement of the waves below. It was a nice change of view, considering that he had spent six months in a quiet and tempered sanctuary with nothing more than a little breeze and green trees.
I had missed it. The ocean, the light buzz of the city running under his skin. He was home, finally. Five days had passed already since their return on Atlantis and they had barely seen eachother. John had took Teyla to the mainland three days ago in order for her to reconnect with her people. He had spent a few hours with Halling, Jinto and their fellow Athosians before flying back to the city where paperwork was waiting for him. It had been really hard to readjust to the crazy schedules of the missions, the security mesures and the amount of reports to write down. Elisabeth had been kind enough to give him a few days to rest and he was looking forward to it. He had met Lorne a few hours ago and had left him in charge of the City. He was not worried. The Major was a very capable man and the best 'second in command' he ever had. He would make a great leader some day, John was certain of it.
The familiar sound of the balcony's doors brought him back to reality and he turned around to face his late visitor. His heart warmed instantly as he met Teyla's beautiful eyes. « Hey » he said, smiling at her « How was your trip ? ». She smiled back, walking towards him « Good. It was good ». He noticed that she was wearing a thin robe that barely covered her nightdress.
« I'm sorry I couldn't pick you up this afternoon, I had an intergalactic summit with Generals O'Neill and Landry ». She stopped two feet from him and he resisted the urge to take her in his arms. « It's alright, John. I understand. Besides, Dr. Beckett took this opportunity to examin my people ».
A rumble of thunder echoed suddenly behind John, reminding him of the approaching storm. « How did it go ? » Teyla asked, concern in her voice.
John sighed, remembering his earlier conversation with his superiors « Well, as expected the IOA is not thrilled by the news but General Landry and General O'Neill seem to be on our side. They assured me that our relationship was not going against regulations, you not being part of the military ».
He saw Teyla release a breath « We'll just have to be careful and discreet to prove that we can still be professionals ». She nodded her approuval, crossing her arms on her chest in an attempt to warm her body. It was chilly out there and she was not dressed enough.
John closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around her. She leaned into him, her face only inches apart from his. « I missed you » John whispered, his eyes boring into hers. Three long days apart from her. Not be able to touch her, kiss her, share a look or a smile.
Teyla's arms wrapped around his neck, her hands gripping his shoulders. Her eyes fell on his lips, weakening his restraint. « I missed you too » she whispered, sending shivers down his spine. This woman was driving him crazy. Their mouths met in an hungry kiss. Tightening his hold on her, pressing her further into his embrace, he deepened the kiss, tasting every inch of her. It felt so good. He inhaled deeply, her sent intoxicating him. He was completely addicted to her.
One of his hand moved up her back, brushing the thin fabric of her robe until it reached the base of her neck. His fingers pressed lightly on her soft skin, the sensation exhilarating. Teyla shivered against him. He didn't know if it was because of him or the chilled air but they soon would have to go back inside.
Droplets of water suddenly fell on his face, confirming his thoughts. Too bad. He really didn't want to let her go. He reluctantly pulled away from her, breaking their kiss. He took a moment to study her face. Her eyes were closed, her swollen lips gasping for air. The cold wind was blowing her brown hair over her face.
Smiling at the beautiful sight in front of him, he brushed away a strand of hair from her face, locking it behind her ear. She slowly opened her eyes, her vision at first unfocused. The thunder rumbled again, this time closer. A droplet of water fell on Teyla's forehead and she frowned, looking up at the dark sky « Do you think that's our new friends visiting us ? ».
John chuckled, amused at the thought. « I don't know. But we should probably get inside ». She nodded, her arms loosing their grip on his shoulders, her warmth leaving his body. His hand lingered on her arm a little longer, slowly descending until he reached her hand. He entertwined his fingers with hers and led her to the door.
As soon as he stepped inside, he felt warmth coming back to his body. Teyla sighed beside him, obviously relieved. They walked through the empty corridors in companionable silence, heading to Teyla's quarters. It was late and almost everyone was fast asleep. But still, it felt good to be able to hold Teyla's hand in public, not hiding his feelings anymore. He had spent five long nights alone in his quarters, sleep eluding him. Five nights worrying about his superior's reaction, trying to figure out the next step in their relationship. He glanced briefly at their entertwined hands, hesitating a moment before finally speaking out.
« You know, I've been looking around the City these days » he started, looking straight ahead, avoiding Teyla's curious gaze. « I've found some interesting spots on the east pier ». He cleared his throat « Nice large quarters, with a beautiful view ». He shrugged nonchalently « I was wondering if you would like to take a look at those quarters with me tomorrow ». Risking a glance at his partner, he saw her smiling. He relaxed instantly and released the breath he was holding.
Teyla's hip bumped into his and she looked at him, mischivious « Be careful, Colonel. You know how rumors start, people talk... you don't want to give them the wrong impression, do you ? ». He smiled « I'll take the risk ».
They reached the transporter. John opened the doors and they stepped in. Teyla pressed her finger on the screen. Seconds later, they arrived on her floor. « Besides » John added, « I think that all the expedition knows about us by now ». Teyla seemed genuinely surprised. She had been gone for three days. It had been long enough to let the word spread.
« Did you really think that McKay could keep a secret ? » he said as a way of explanation. Teyla laughed « Of course » she whispered.
« By the way, I've discovered something very disturbing » he added, « apparently, some people have placed a bet on the outcome of our relationship ».
Teyla stopped, frozen « What do you mean ? ».
John sighed. He lifted his arm and kissed her hand, gently strocking his thumb against her palm « Well, it seems that our mutual attraction for eachother was not so subtil, after all » he said, « it started a year ago, when Bates was around ». He saw Teyla flinch at the name and decided to lighten the mood « F.Y.I. Ronon's buying our drinks next time we visit his Satedan's friends. He's a rich man, now ». Teyla's face lightened up « He bet on us ?! » she asked, bemused. John smiled « why do you think he was so happy to see us together at the cloister ? ». Teyla laughed, shaking her head. They started walking again, turning right at the next corner.
« So, how did your people take the news ? » John asked, cautious. He knew little about Athosian's custums and he was afraid that they would not accept an outsider among them. Teyla squeezed his hand « Halling told me that great leaders always follow their heart ». John gave her a questioning look. She just shrugged « I think he new already ».
Teyla's quarters were at the end of the corridor. They slowed down their pace. « My people are harvesting next week. They need laborers. I was thinking that... maybe Atlantis's personel could help them. There is always a celebration after the harvest, food and ruus wine ». She looked at him, suddenly shy « Maybe you could come and celebrate with us... ».
John smiled « Sure, you can count on me. I'll ask Elisabeth to postpone some missions, we won't have any problem finding volonteers to help with the harvest ». He winked « and if there's ruus wine, I'm certain that Ronon will be there too ». Teyla laughed.
They walked the remaining distance in silence, finally stopping at her door. He didn't want to leave her tonight but it was not his choice to make. Teyla didn't move away. She was staring at their joined hands, her beautiful smile mesmerizing him.
« You know » she said finally, « this storm is quite frightening ». John pursed his lips, trying to hide his smile. He waited for her to continue « I'm not sure I will be able to sleep well tonight... alone ». She looked up at him expectantly, her teeth biting at her lower lip, tempting him.
Playing along, he shrugged « well, I can keep you company, if it makes you feel more comfortable ». Teyla's smile widen and she nodded. She operated the door behind her, her hand never leaving his and he followed her into her quarters.
Life was full of surprises, paths crossed, roads not taken. Teyla told him once that his people had brought new hope to her galaxy. He didn't know if they would defeat the wraith but he liked to think that he had been brought to these stars for a reason, that he didn't meet Teyla by accident. He couldn't help but wonder what were the odds of falling in love with a beautiful warrior princess living fifty light years away from earth, in the middle of the Pegasus galaxy. He was definitly a lucky man.
