Chapter 04
In this world we still don't know
Expand life.
Mik tried valiantly to ignore the fact she was currently inside a giant whale's mouth. They had been unable to ride over Whamon since the digimon was swimming as deep as it could to avoid further company. They would had to resurface as they neared the island, but for now, it was safer to stay where they were.
Inside the mouth of a whale digimon at the bottom of the ocean. Lovely.
Shiny yelped and hanged on as their ride changed inclination. "Whoa! Give us a warning first!"
There were a number of grumbles of approval as the rest of them scrambled to find something to hold on to. They didn't change course, which made Pizza glance at its clock and then at the group. "Well, I think we are nearing the island." Pizza informed them.
"About time!" Fufu declared, shuddering. With no food and in not one of the most pleasant of places, their trip had been perfectly miserable. At least they had been able to dry themselves thanks to Sunmon, but they doubted Whamon would had accepted Sunmon roasting a bit of its tongue for dinner.
Digimon spit... I want a bath. Mik thought mournfully as she stared at her clothes.
"I apologize if you are uncomfortable, children." A deep voice answered from above.
"...Whamon?"
"Yes, my child."
"...I will be shutting up now."
They heard something that sounded suspiciously like a chuckle in return. Pizza looked a bit chagrined, but Fabulous was grinning from ear to ear. Obviously, at least Fabulous had known the digimon could heard them. Nice of you to share. Mik thought uncharitably. She hoped it hadn't heard some of her less than polite comments during the ride.
"Hold on, children." The digimon warned them this time.
The whale like creature surged forward for a while and then leveled itself. The girls gasped as it opened its mouth, revealing the island they were fast approaching. Over the island, a web formed a dome that shimmered in the morning sun.
"Whoaaaa! What's that?" Fufu exclaimed.
"That's a barrier that keeps the island safe. The rest of the curses can't enter the island without permission." Pizza answered. "Seme curse won't be able to drop for a visit while we are here."
The whale digimon swam towards the beach and let them on the sand. The sun shone brightly over them and they could heard the sound of bird digimons in the distance."I will bring you to the shore and return to the continent to see if I can find any of your friends, children." Whamon spoke, swimming back to open sea. "I will be back in a day or two."
"Thank you, Whamon. We will be waiting." Pizza answered.
"Good luck, children."
"Bye! Thank you, Whamon!" Cure said, waving as the digimon disappeared.
"Is the place we have to reach very far?" Mik asked.
"We should be there soon. Whamon left us as close as it could. The island isn't very large at any rate." Fabulous replied.
The group began to make their way towards inland when the beach exploded, sand flying everywhere as a digimon that looked like a cross between a dinosaur and a rotting mollusk emerged and blocked their way. The girls yelped and began to run when Pizza sighed and grabbed the nearest one, Mik, by the scruf of her t-shirt. "You don't need to run, girls."
"Well, chosen children, the curses will be happy to see you."
The group stopped and piled behind the two curses. Fabulous looked amused, while Pizza seemed to be a bit exasperated. "I thought the curses couldn't enter this place!" Shiny shouted, tugging Mik so they could all make their escape from crazy digimon and curses.
"They can't. Ryuudamon."
"On it. Don't worry my ladies, I will be back shortly~"
"Lets go on." Pizza motioned as the girls watched the digimon get pummeled.
"The barrier keeps the curses out, but nothing stops digimon up to champion level from getting in." Fabulous explained as his digimon rejoined them. "Our fabulous digimon can enter, of course, because it recognize them as child level ones."
"So..." Shiny began. "Where are we going?"
"Do you know how digimons are born?"
"...we aren't getting the Digimon version of the talk, are we?"
"...Digimon are born from eggs that form from digital data that scatters and gathers at Primary Villages. There is one village in every continent, more or less, and there is one in this island."
They walked in silence for a while, Ryuudamon and Sunmon cheerfully taking down any one who so much as looked at them wrong. Fabulous and Pizza pushed them on. "What's the hurry? Aren't we suppose to be safe here?"
"We were meant to come yesterday and you will be safer when you can protect yourself. Seme curse and the rest won't think twice of killing us, but they will try to capture you. If we die, you will need to be able to save yourself and your captured friend."
The girls gulped and followed the curses obediently in silence without complaint. There wasn't much they could say about it anyways. Eventually they approached a village with cribs filling the streets, big, colourful eggs nested in them. A red digimon sat waiting for them at the center of the village, a group of tiny babies surrounding him.
"Good afternoon, Eleckmon!" Pizza called, waving at the digimon.
"Well, you are finally here! What took you so long?" The other grumbled in response. "I was beginning to think you weren't coming at all!"
"We got a bit caught up at the continent." Fabulous said drily. "Seme curse seemed to think he would be a better company for our lovely friends than us."
Eleckmon scowled and nodded. "Well, nothing to do about that. Come on, let's get to business. Wander around and you should be able to find your digimon. Hurry up, you don't have all day."
"...how will we know which one is ours?" Shiny asked, waving at the many cribs. "There must be a hundred eggs here!"
"One will call to you. Now get to it!" The digimon answered testily.
"How friendly." Mik grumbled as the girls scrambled to look around for an egg that 'called' to them.
------------------
There was blood everywhere.
Her hands were dyed with it and her eyes refused to turn away. Her hands might be shaking, but she didn't know. She sat frozen, hypnotized as the crimson liquid stained the dirt. She knew she had to do something, anything, but her hands shook as she tried to reach towards the other.
"North?" Louly gasped and E put an arm around her.
"Don't move, you will hurt yourself farther." Chocolate commanded firmly, pressed a piece of fabric around Acrossai's leg as a makeshift bandage. The blood soaked it quickly, and the curse grabbed one of the blankets and tossed it at Treyen's direction.
"Tear those up please." The Finn nodded and began to cut strings of fabric out of a blanket. "We have to stop the bleeding."
"And we have to move soon, or they will catch up with us."
"I know Bakumon... But we can't move until we get her to stop bleeding."
"As it is, she won't be able to walk with that leg."
"Is there anyone who can heal her?"
"...maybe at the island..."
Sound was becoming increasingly muted. The world was losing its colour and the ground becoming less solid under her feet. "North, calm down. We can't carry both of you! Don't pass out on us." The girl nodded dumbly as E shook her. Acro was hurt. They had to focus on her. "Help me, will you?" North felt herself being lowered to the ground. The darkness receded a bit, and the world regained some of it's colour.
Just a minute and she would get up.
She would make the red go away.
------------------
Tine shivered as she clutched in the reduced space, mist making it impossible to see beyond a meter or two. "I'm sick and tired of running from this bastard."
"I wouldn't recommend joining them for a dance, my fair lady." A man dressed like a flamenco dancer answered, peering into the mist. "It should be safe to move now. We should join hands or I fear someone is going to end up taking a swim."
"Finally." Icepelt grumbled. The group did as suggested and moved slowly through the mist. Occasionally someone would step on a puddle, but aside of that they made their way safely. As the mist dispersed, they saw a structure that disappeared into the sea. They approached cautiously, but nothing emerged as they peered inside.
"What is this?" Nise asked, looking inside.
"A tunnel… Do you think it connects with the island?" Kao answered.
Flamenco looked at the tunnel, but it was dark and he couldn't see very far. "Maybe… It is worth a try. I don't think we are going to be able to meet up with Whamon with the curses prowling around. At least it would give us a place to hide."
"We would be easy targets, though. And it would take days." Midori pointed out.
"Not necessarily… Do you think we could use this wheels to make a sort of wagon? Your digimon could drag us. At least it should be faster than walking…" Nise walked towards something that might had been the chassis of a car and poked the wheel. "It has air in it, so it should work if we find something to use as a platform."
"Come on, lets do it. The faster we are out of here, the least chance of meeting one of the curses and me introducing them to my tizona."
------------------
Chocolate sighed in relief as the bleeding finally slowed down. It looked like Acro would live to tell the tale. For now. As long they found an actual healer at the Primary Village. "Come on. We should be able to move her now. Bakumon."
"On it." The digimon was envolped in shining light and a huge minotaur appeared in its place. "Vajramon!"
"What are we going to do?" Treyen asked as she helped Chocolate into Vajramon back. The curse climbed up and held onto the girl. If they encountered anything, Vajramon would need its hands free. And it would save up energy by not turning into Ultimate right away.
"Whamon will probably drop the rest into the Primary Village's island and then come back to search for us. We should try to at least go to the secondary locations we agreed to meet in."
They started to walk across the shore for a long time. Even as the day dragged on, the mist didn't fade. Eventually, night fell and they kept walking. They began to hear in the distance the sound of laugher and merriment. The group looked around frightened, but they saw nothing for a long time, until Kulta pointed at the sea. "What's that?"
At first they couldn't say, but the moon eventually shone over the object and the mist cleared, revealing an old kind of vessel. "A ship?"
"...do you think that those are the curses?"
"I don't know... I have never heard of them having a ship..."
"Should I take a look?" Vajramon asked, shifting into a battle ready stance.
"What if they are trying to lure you away?"
"Maybe we should just run away."
As they argued, Kulta saw a smaller ship being lowered from the main one and it rapidly made its way towards them. "Whatever we do, now is the time to do it!"
But it was too late.
A couple of humanoid digimon dressed as wizards, a candle like digimon and a ghost digimon disembarked from the little ship and surrounded them. "Who goes there?" Asked one of the wizards, stepping forth from the circle the newcomers had formed around them.
"...just travelers making their way home." Chocolate replied lightly, eyeing the digimon. Vajramon could take them, but they knew nothing of what else was waiting on the ship. What if there were a couple Ultimates there? They didn't need to beat it, just weaken it enough for them to be found and the curses' digimon to finish the job.
"Travelers? An odd sort of travelers I have never seen before." The wizard remarked, fingering its staff. "You have seen us having our party and traveling by moonlight. For that you must pay a toll or work for us."
"...we will pay." Chocolate looked at the ship and gazed back at the wizard digimon. "Could you take us in your ship towards our destination?"
"We can take you anywhere you want. For a price." The wizard digimon replied. "What are you willing to pay? Remember you must pay the toll as well."
"How about this?" Pyro asked, bringing out a bag bigger than herself from somewhere, probably hyperspace.
The digimon took the bag cautiously and peered inside. "Hum, those are different from what I have seen... What are them?"
"Bombs. You can store them and use them when you want to."
"Intriguing but not enough."
"What about this?" Chocolate produced a small sack and offered it to their interpellator.
"What is this?" The digimon inquired, producing a chocolate bar from the sack.
"Chocolate. You can eat it." The curse proceeded to unwrap the bar and offered it back to the digimon.
The digimon sniffed at the bar and cautiously took a bite. Its eyes widened and he proceeded to devour the rest of the chocolate. "We will take it."
