Character Design - Mask

Found yet another way to color. Process is different from most, but I actually enjoyed this one better than the others- prolly since it's a scanned in sketch so I couldn't futz around with the form like I usually spend so much time messing up.

Mmm. I am never doing fur again: fail. Character design- left over thought process from that crit so long ago, the one where shanth was talking about masks and deception: is it really so deceptive if it's so obvious that it's a mask, or would it make it even more deceptive if you didn't know it was a mask until further inspection?

This turned out better than I was expecting (since I actually finished it and all) but I'm not sure if it's a successful design or not. I tried to apply certain things to make it negative, and even thought about my own distaste in fleshy non-human animals (naked mole rats, hairless cats- creepy). Hands and faces, when seperated from the familiar body- and haha, lovehandles... Then, in defense of the human hands, thought about the whole notion of want, and grabbing- something that can only be done with a thumb... Thought about it even further, and the whole concept of, 'if that thing actually existed, would you mind sitting next to it on the bus?'

I'll give myself a day to think it over, but already I'm thinking of things I could do to clarify: change the background color; though minor, it is a little too calming for what I was aiming for- or is that part of the deception? Facial expression; perhaps something even more neutral, a smirk would be over doing it. Make the hands a little more creepy; perhaps fingernails or more lines (withered hands?) Hmmmmmmmmm.
