Had a surprising moment of wildness today as I walked home from the dentist's. Just above a bus stop, in our rather nondescript housing estate, were three red kites. Never have I seen them so absolutely deserve the name sky dancers. It was like a secret gift, just for me. None of the other people walking around even looked up once.

What a thing to see in a cool grey sky! They were so close I could see the ruddy feather on their tails, and the ochre under their wings. It made my heart sing. I stood there, next to the caravan that parks near the main road, and just gloried in the movement, and the way there seemed to be no other birds in the sky. I love the way nature can provide these magic moments out of nowhere.

The bus came by, three people got off and two got on, and they all rushed past me as if I were invisible, standing there, looking at the sky.

So, two days before thanksgiving, I am thankful that wildness is still all around us, even in a suburban housing estate, and I am thankful that I still have the eyes to see it.

me, adventures, words
