There are mermaids in these waters.

Mer-folk, the children's children of worldbuilding gods, if they wanted to be fair, and so they'd speak on meeting those beneath the waves face to face. But above the surface, ship heeled over and running before the wind, they marked the way the water splashed, and tacked to avoid the playgrounds of mermaids.

Playing in uncharted waters was a dangerous enough game without offending the people who lived in it, after all. And they were playing, catch-me-if-you-can with a sea-prince who blustered and strutted a bit too loud, loud enough that the Captain's Daughter laughed the low wild chuckle of her challenges, licked the boy's cheek and told him he was It. The boy was flabbergasted enough by the action that she'd walked out, collecting her crew from tables and dart games with glances and gestures, by the time he had a reply.

So they're running wild in mermaids' waters, flying colours that at home would name them pirates but here is for laughter's sake.
