I have heard of good cooks on the Island, but I have also seen/heard the phrase "weird period food" used. So at least part of it is just some aren't adventurous with their food (more for us then!) I think James has it in that some get turned off quickly, because I think good food does happen here. Ruantallan and Lyndhaven has had great cooks and a darn good track record, but there have been feasts that had glitches, it never turned me off.

Do they do lunches (aka dayboards out there? I found them a good venue to do the whole "hey, medieval food isn't scary" thing ;)
Haven't seen, or heard of, dayboards out here in the same sense as they do out east... not even close :S
I've been to a few bad ones but, thankfully, know they are hardly the norm. Heck... my crown event cooking was a "too much" feast and I knew it (got talked into doing far more dishes than I intended... lesson learned).

What surprised me even more is the little to no concern about providing anything near medieval at these ventures, however people seem fine with it and I guess many do back home as well.
My standards are just too high :P
