Plotting death by Powerpoint

I'm off to Grenoble tomorrow (with a brief respite stop overnight at Bicester because of the ludicrous nature of of Sunday train timetables ...*)

Four days of workshops, including such fascinating subjects as 'Ethnographic approaches,' 'Content analysis,' and 'Action research and bootlegging.'  (I'm rather intrigued by that one ...)

But the meat of ( Read more... )

There's a hilarious presentation by, I believe, Damian Conway about how to give presentations using Powerpoint. It's for computer geeks, but it might help you out a little-- or at least make you laugh at your predicament. He talks about use of images, and how many bullet points people can deal with before their heads explode.

I'll try to find you a link when I get home....

Sorry-- it was Mark Jason Dominus, another Perl guru, and the talk is Conference Presentation Judo. Here's the link:

Ooh, there's some good stuff in there! Thank you.

The trouble is, I know how to do a good presentation - I speak at seminars all the time. Short, sharp bullet point, snappy pictures and all that sort of stuff ... but I'm trying to present a very academic, 'let's cite everything we can', paper. Which means lots of evidence supported argument, not concise summaration of fact or theory. *sigh*

So I either cram everything on a few short slides and overwhelm everyone with text, or spread it out with pictures and diagrams and have to whizz through a cornucopia of slides with barely the time to see one before I'm on to the next.

Mind you, I suspect everyone else in the group has the same problem!

Hmm. Have you ever seen anyone do a good one of this kind of presentation? Maybe it's not possible....

But as beautifully as you write, I suspect you will find a way in this endeavor, too. Good luck.

I particularly like his section on use of Illustrations. My 11 year old small hobgoblinn likes the cow picture. The rather disgusting one. Boys. Sigh.

Never mind. If I'm feeling well enough tomorrow, I'm going to try to make lemon sauce pudding (the recipe for which is quite different from, and a little more complicated than the one for choklit same). That might help.

Aha! Inspirational Lemon pudding. I shall look forward to that. :-)

... and if still not well, there is sticky toffee pudding in the freezer, as long as we remember to get it out to defrost in time.
