I had a strange evening indeed. I was planning on showing up at Jesi's flat unannounced after work, but she beat me to it, and it gets more strange. I was giving Juana (a woman I work with who speaks very little english) and her son a ride home from work, and Jesi calls me. Apparently she's going to be hanging out with one of her friends tonight, etc, etc, "It's good that you told me that because I was going to show up at your place unannounced, and I'm glad to know it would have been fruitless before I tried it." etc, etc. So I pull into my driveway and it looks like there is a young woman sitting on the loveseat that resides on my porch. I know this young woman. I asked her if she just came from her friend's house and she gave me this "don't tell me you're this gulliable" look. So apparently we had the same idea, and she won.
We had a lot of fun, mostly hanging out and talking about music. About 1:45 am, she decides that she's tired and needs to leave. We leave the house a little before 2, and there's cars parked on my block, which never happens, it's the block just west of mine that has cars parked on it usually and there are also two cops parked on my block standing on the sidewalk, talking. Jesi and I both agree this is strange, and decide to drive off anyway. We pass by the block on the west and realize that these were the cars of people attending a party at Joe Walker's house. I noticed my brother standing on the porch and decide to yell, "The Sox Suck!" because he knows full well that the red sox are the greatest team in the universe and I know this will get his attention.
So I'm talking to James through my open car window, facing West on Castro street. There's cars parked on both sides of the road, meaning that only one car can comfortably drive through at a time. While I'm stopped in the middle of the road, I hear a noise. James, Jesi, and I all look up to see a car hurtling North down Jones street turning east onto Castro, this car has some difficulting turning straight and drives up onto a lawn on the north side of the road, broadsiding a driveway-parked white ford taurus and moving it a good meter. The car quickly begins to back up and speed down castro. Jesi reminds me that I should probably get out of his way. So I find myself backing up very quickly to escape this unbelievable hit and run machine, who did hit another car backing up, and is bumping into cars as it drives down the street.
By some miracle I managed not to back into anyone for quite some time, but keeping a car in one lane in reverse at 20 or 30 is difficult, so I eventually pulled into an empty space and screeched to a halt to avoid a car myself. He drove by in what looked like a black grand prix. I'm pretty sure the two cops on my block followed him. Jesi and I got out and talked with people for a few minutes. The White taurus was absoloutely smashed in on the left side. I was nervous and shaking. I took Jesi home and tried to talk, but we were both pretty freaked out. I listened to Pinback on the way home. I'm really glad no one was hurt, and that I didn't get hurt head on. I feel sorry for the poor ford driver.
This has been a strange evening indeed. Language barrier, Disappointment, romantic surprise, coincidental run-in with my brother, narrowly escaping death by speeding backwards down a narrow road. Boy I'm tired after all that. take care guys.
