Today I feel sad.
I have just lived through the greatest summer of my life
and the greatest defeat in past months.
when I fail,
I draw closer to God for council
and I wonder
was I not close enough to begin with?

Once, when I woke up, it had been snowing
and there were ravens in the forest behind my house.
They were burying their beaks deep in the drift
to find the food that winter hid.
I had not been able to understand
why I understood this so well
until today.
