Max was sitting at the kitchen table, his legs curled around the chair legs and his shoulders pressed against the table edge. It wasn't the most comfortable position for anyone but, when he was reading, it worked for him.
Dree came in from the Great Room and smiled, stepping up behind him. She leaned over the chair and pressed a kiss to the back of his head. "How's the story?" she asked, giving a quick glance to the page he was on.
"It is okay," he replied.
Dree straightened and reached for the bookmark that had been lain aside and stuck it between the pages. "Bath time."
Max twisted to face her, a look of pleading on his face. "But, Mommy," he whined, "I am in the mid-dle." He turned up the pout and stuck his lower lip out. "Pleeeease can I finish?"
Dree stared at him for a second and sigh. "You can finish the page. Then bath." Raising her eyebrows, Max knew that this was the only leniency he would get, and he nodded. He turned back to the book and moved the bookmark out of the way, and gave a quick glance to the end of the page.
"Mommy! The s-sen-s-tence does not finish on this page!" He gave her a look, hoping for a little extra time. "I can not just let it leave there!"
"Well," Dree replied as she moved to the sink and reached for one of the plates stacked on the counter, "Don't start that sentence." She made a face at him and smiled, but at the look of horror on his face, she shrugged. "I guess you'll just have to wonder what happens." Giving him a glance, she repeated the look and nodded. "You can finish it after your bath."
Max made a face and huffed, returning to the book. Dree glanced away again, fighting a smile. Once he got into a rhythm reading, getting him to stop was nearly impossible. But, if she waited to make him take a bath until he was done, it would be tomorrow.

Dree was washing the forks from dinner, a few minutes later, when she saw the ten-year-old trying to sneak a peek at the next page. "Max," she said simply. Her son's hand jerked back and he made a face, then made a dramatic show of putting the bookmark back between the pages and closed the book. With a heavy sigh, he slid out of the chair and stalked off toward his bedroom.
