Max was lounging in the hammock, actually making some progress in his new book. There was a nice, warm breeze giving a slight sway to the hammock.
Yep, today was a good day.
Movement out of the corner of his eye caused Max to glance sideways, and he watched his sister for a moment. She was skipping along the path from the porch to the gate, minding her own business until she reached the gate, and started talking to the guard standing there.
Knowing she was being watched, Max went back to his book, and was almost a whole page in when he felt a strong shift.
"Out!" Leora demanded, her little fists holding tight to the edge of the hammock, and giving him a glare.
"Go 'way, L'ora," Max huffed, and reshifted.
"No! My turn!" Leora demanded again, making a face as she pulled on the hammock, trying to dislodge him.
Max leaned toward her and swatted at her hands. "No! I was here first!" Leora screeched at him and leaned closer, trying to grab at his book. He twisted away, causing the hammock to sway, and knocked his sister on her rear end.
Leora screeched again and crawled under the hammock, on all fours, then popped up on his other side. The book was much closer, now, and it was easily snatched from his hands. "L'ORA!" Max shouted as his book went flying across the yard. He leaned toward her, ready to give Leora a swift pop, but she moved before he could make contact.
Her arm had slipped through one of the holes in the hammock, and his rolling toward her caused her to drop. Leora screamed at the loss of gravity and Max grabbed her other arm, to keep her from falling. "Do not move, L'ora!" he shouted.
Leora, however, wasn't having any of his orders and tried to pull her hand free. Swinging her legs up, her foot made contact with Max's thigh and he twisted, rolling automatically against the pain. Just as a pleased smile crossed the four-year-old's features, the movement of the hammock worked against her, and the whole thing moved up, then swung back down.
Leora screamed again as Max tried to counter the movement and grab her hand again, as she was still stuck, but before he could get a secure hold, there was a loud pop and Leora screamed. Max practically vaulted himself off the hammock and rolled into the grass, while the guard came over the short fence. Moving quickly, Max hauled his sister into his arms and lifted her off the ground, toward the hammock, so that the guard could help get her unstuck.
"MOMMY!" he yelled over Leora's howls. It was another moment before Leora was free from the hammock, simply because the guard happened to have a small knife on him, and had cut the fabric to get her free. Max fell back, still holding her, and the contact of her arm to the solid ground caused Leora to scream again, even louder.
Max helped her sit up and pulled her close as their mother came out of the house. Leora was now whimpering as Max cradled her, taking care not to put any pressure on her arm. "It is okay. You are okay," he kept telling her in a low whisper. "Mommy!" he called as Dree got closer to them, having just received a quick report from the guard, "there was a pop." He gave her a look that had the same pain she'd seen on his face a few years ago, in those first days after the kids had been rescued.
"It's okay, Monkey," Dree nodded, reaching slowly for her daughter. "Let me take a look, Bug." Leora whimpered again and pressed into Max's hold, but never took her eyes off her mother.
"It is okay, L'ora," he whispered. "She will not hurt you." Max didn't realize he'd said it, but Dree had heard him. Leora heard him, too, and even though she had very few memories from the experience, it was enough to calm her down, so Dree could examine the injury.
"Minn," Dree started in a low tone, giving Leora a smile, "will you call us a ride?" She didn't know if it was a simple sprain or a break, but when it came to the kids, Dree would rather over-react.
"Yes, ma'am," the guard nodded, then stepped back away from them.
Dree gave both kids a smile and nodded. "We'll let Doctor Chapel take a look, okay? She'll make you feel all better, Bug." With another nod to Max, she added: "Let me go tell Mama where we're going, okay?" The rest of the kids were playing at the apartment - Leora had been wandering between there and the house, all morning - and Max had pretty much had the house to himself, which is why he'd gone outside.
"It will be okay, L'ora," he told her quietly, as Dree hurried to the porch. "I breaked my arm, one time, and I got better." Leora's bottom lip was drooping, but she didn't try to get away from him.
