"No."
"What?" Joe asked though a laugh. Delilah pulled out of his hold and shook her head.
"I said 'No', Joseph." Joe made a face at the use of his full name.
"Why?" he asked, making a face as she moved further away. He knew why, of course. Asking her to marry him wasn't something he was really expecting to get an easy answer to.
"You know why," Del huffed, turning enough to give him an exasperated look.
"I have no intention of staying in this city, Del," he told her plainly. Del's head whipped up and she stared at him for a second, before looking away again. "I bought some land," he continued, slowly closing the distance between them. "Other side of the bay, other side of the mountains," he added in a lower tone as he reached her. Del didn't respond as his arms wrapped around her. "Horses," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her neck. "Cattle."
Del's eyes closed at his touch and she tried to will herself to not give in.
"No one out there will care who you are or what you do. Did," he corrected, as Del had already closed up shop and shipped her girls off to other places. "All they'll know is that I love you, you love me. And you run things." Del fought a smirk at that last part. "Clem's already agreed to go. Lizzie, too."
"I'm no good at running things," Del admitted, trying to keep up her resolve. "Besides, what use is a ranch wife who can't use one arm?"
"You're the one with a mind for business and making deals, Sweetheart. God knows I don't know a damn thing about runnin' any sort of business. Besides," Joe smirked and pressed a kiss to her ear. "Last time I checked, you're quite skilled at many things, without using either arm."
