Joseph Bennett didn't intend to start his morning breaking up a fight, but San Francisco never failed to be interesting. A fistfight had broken out in the street, prompted by a dockworker making a comment about the mother of a passing blacksmith.

Joe had been on his way to visit a professor when he turned the corner and found his path blocked by the crowd cheering on the brawl. With the help of two burly delivery men, Joe managed to break the fight up, and while he was getting the story from the blacksmith with the nosebleed, a flash of green caught his eye.

Looking up, Joe spotted a brunette in an emerald green dress moving quickly along the walkway, a crate in her hands. A pair of well-dressed women blocked her path and she stopped, stepping aside as the two raised their noses in the air and moved past her.

Joe watched her for a moment, noting the slightest hint of disappointment on her face, before she glanced up and caught his eye. His eyes widened for a moment, realizing he'd been caught staring, and he did the only thing he could think of, which was to give her a nod. She almost looked flustered, and took the distraction of someone calling his attention as her chance to duck down the alleyway.

When Joe turned back, she was gone.
