She wanders through the rubble, trying to remember the good times instead of noticing the destruction. It's been nearly ten annuals since the quakes that ravaged the city, bringing ancient buildings to the ground and taking so many lives with them. There is an odd calm in the air; the echo of a thriving civilization on the wind.
Maybe it's just her memory, though.
A flash of color catches her eye, and she stops, leaning to take a closer look. Her breath catches when she realizes what she has found. Carefully, she pulls the queen's ring from under the rock.
The cemetery is long overgrown, but remains untouched. Even when the looters came through, they left this hallowed ground alone; they had the decency to respect the dead.
She moves carefully, trying not to disturb the overgrowth as she heads toward the royal family's resting place. Like so many others, they didn't survive the initial quake.
She kneels in front of the shared headstone, her fingers grazing over the names - the queen, her husband, and their two young daughters - before moving to the hard soil. She digs a small hole and drops the ring, returning it to its rightful owner.
