Audrey Springer hated that the love of her life was leaving. Especially that he was leaving for war. But, she also knew that what she wanted wasn't as important as what he wanted. Wyatt wanted to go; he'd dreamed of being a Marine most of his life.

The war was inevitable, and it was all any of them could do but trust in the ones making the decisions. They didn't know what to expect, as the last true war the country had faced had ended nearly fifty years prior.

The night before he shipped out, Wyatt proposed. She turned him down, simply because she didn't want to be the girl sitting at home, pining for her love to return. She also didn't need to have a ring on her finger to keep other men away. There were only two men in her life, and there would only ever be the two: Wyatt and her father.

When the time came for Wyatt's unit to ship out, there was a small ceremony and a last-minute goodbye for the soldiers and their families. They had the training they needed and no one doubted they would be home soon. Some of the men were fighting the nerves, but most were generally looking forward to doing their duty.

She had ridden over with a fellow 'Marine wife', only one who was properly married to Wyatt's best friend. As they said final goodbyes, Wyatt proposed to her again, but she said no. The smile on her face as she said, it, though, made him smile even more. "Every time you say no to me, I know it's a yes," he teased.

Still, she said 'No'. She wanted to him to ask when he came home, and only then would she give him the answer she knew he wanted.

Just before the final order to move out, Wyatt reached into his pocket and tossed his keys at her. "Take the Jeep!" he told her. "Keep her gassed up and off the wrong corners," he added with a grin. She made a face at him, but nodded. It wouldn't do to have the poor old girl stuck in a parking lot for an unknown amount of time.

She waited with the others until the plane was out of sight. Some of the observers simply left, others hugged and cried; picnics were arranged, drinks at the local bar, and general well-wishes were given to all.

When she managed to reach his Jeep, she stood for a moment and placed a hand on the hood. "Just you and me now, Old Girl," she whispered. She wasn't going to cry. She would be tough and stubborn, same as she always was. She did without him for almost a year after he left town to go to basic training, and she'd manage without him, again.

Climbing into the seat, Audrey rolled her eyes at the mess he'd left and shook her head. That's when the flash of light caught her eye.

Hanging from a pale purple ribbon tied to the rear-view mirror was a silver ring, an endless wave etched into the surface. There was a small slip of paper also attached.

Third time's a charm.
Hold on to this for me. I'll be back to claim you both faster than you can say 'no' again.
Love you always, and forever.

She was helping out at a friend's house, nearly a year later - the new baby had been unexpected, but well documented for his father's return - when the Chaplain and Base Commander showed up.

She thought they were coming with bad news for the new mother.

She never thought they'd be coming for her.
