The smell of freshly-baked pie was wafting through the house, creeping under doorways and around corners. The blonde in the kitchen had been up half the morning - a few hours earlier than the sun, in fact - and could quite possibly be accused of not having gone to bed at all, the night before.
She was in her own little world, at present, as the kitchen was her safe place. Well, she had other safe places, so perhaps it was better designated as her happy place. Either way, when she was in the kitchen and humming, she was in a good mood.
And, as she was actually saying words, it was fairly evident she was in a great mood.
Sitting on the counter were two steaming pies, one sweet potato and one whiskey pecan; in the oven was a loaf of sweet potato bread; marinating next to the pies were sweet potatoes in a whiskey glaze, which would end up getting mashed into a topping for a Shepherd's Pie (complete with a whiskey-based gravy); and, in the freezer, was a batch of sweet potato ice cream.
But, to be perfectly honest, even she wasn't sold on that last one turning out, which is why she made a backup dessert of Chocolate Whiskey ice cream. That one, she knew how to make in her sleep.
She was intent on making this his best birthday dinner yet.
