To say the family inside the house was baking in the heat was a bit of an understatement. It was hot outside, but, as the sun went down, it only seemed to get hotter. And, if it wasn't uncomfortable enough, the air conditioner died in the middle of the night.
Blankets had been pulled off the beds, windows were open on the upper levels and the least amount of clothes possible were being worn. The toddler had been moved into his parents' bedroom, simply because there was a breeze coming through their window that wasn't coming through his.
As the sun came up, there was clearly no relief in sight.
After breakfast, Rick announced he was going to give the AC unit a look, which left Mel and Daniel to keep cool. Daniel had a cool bath, they read a book, and they played with some toys. After about an hour, Mel decided they should go check on Daddy, and hauled a freshly-diapered Daniel into her arms.
She had opted for a tank top, shorts, and a ponytail, while Daniel was simply in his diaper. As they moved through the dark house - since having the lights off seemed to cut a bit of the heat down - the sound of clanking coming from the basement had little Daniel's attention.
"What is that noise?" Mel asked him as they moved down the stairs to the basement. She tightened her hold on him as they went, because he was leaning toward the noise, curious where it was coming from. Coming around the corner, past the boxes of Christmas decorations, Mel's eyebrow went up at the sight of Rick. "Hello, Fireman," she breathed, biting her lip slightly to hold back anything more.
Reaching up, he smacked the side of the air conditioner and shook his head. "It's dead." Rick was also in a tank top and shorts, but had a sheen of sweat from the heat and physical exertion of fighting the appliance. He glanced up and gave her a look, then smiled. "Last time you looked at me like that," he started, leaning to pull the wrench free from the pipe then pointing to her with it, "we got a little drool machine." He smiled and leaned down to kiss Daniel's grinning cheek while holding the wrench out of the toddler's reach.
"Yeah, well..." Mel started, giving him another look, "lookin' like that, you might just get yourself another one." Rick laughed heartily and wondered if Daniel would sleep long enough in the heat so that they could take a shower.
