Cameron buckled her seatbelt and turned to Remy, who'd been awkwardly silent since Cameron had temporarily lost her mind and smelled her. The blonde shook her head, trying to shake away her embarrassment.
“So what are you in the mood for?” She said, finally breaking the silence.
“Hmm?” Remy said distractedly.
“Food, I need it,” Cameron said simply, “and I think you do too.”
“Oh, yeah,” Remy said, turning to her with a smile, “um I don't care. Pick something that you really like, I'm pretty easy when it comes to food.”
Cameron smiled and nodded before turning on her car and pulling out into the street.
Remy chuckled and shook her head slightly, taking another bite.
“What?” Cameron said, laughing slightly along with Remy.
The brunette shrugged, “I just never figured you for a pizza girl,” she said simply, picking a piece of pepperoni off of Cameron's plate.
“Hey!” The blonde said, trying to snatch the pepperoni back but Remy was too quick.
She chewed on it smugly, “what? You took it off, I figured you didn't want it.” She reached for another one but Cameron slapped her hand away lightly.
“Just because I pick them off doesn't mean that I'm not going to eat them.” She said, placing a piece in her mouth for emphasis.
“So let me get this straight,” Remy said, holding her hands up, “you order a pepperoni pizza, extra pepperoni, but you pick the pepperoni off and eat it when you're done?”
Cameron nodded, munching happily on a new piece of pizza. Remy laughed.
“You're insane.” She said, snatching away another pepperoni.
An hour later found them back at Remy's apartment. After pizza Cameron had taken the younger doctor back to the hospital to pick up her car. Remy had insisted that they not waste gas by taking two cars, so they left Cameron's at the hospital with Remy's promise that she would take her back and not leave her stranded somewhere.
“So,” Remy said, as they stood awkwardly in the middle of her living room, “when you said 'hang out', you didn't happen to have a plan that went along with that did you?”
“Why yes,” Cameron said, mockingly, “in fact I even made a power point presentation to show us step-by-step how we should 'hang out'.”
Without warning Remy pounced, tackling Cameron onto the couch.
“If you're gonna be snarky, I'm gonna be tickly.” She said, holding Cameron's hands above her head. Cameron had erupted into laughter the second Remy made her move.
“What?” She said in-between laughs.
“Allow me to show you, using my hands on demonstration.” Remy said, making fun of Cameron's previous remark. She released Cameron's hands only to attack the blonde's sides with her fingers. Cameron shrieked through her laughter causing Remy to wince slightly.
“Jesus, you are loud.”
“Tha-that's what...that's what she said!” Cameron managed. She grabbed Remy's hands, pulling them away from her sides. Thankfully the brunette didn't fight against her, she was completely out of breath.
Remy laughed slightly as she gazed down at the woman below her.
“What?” Cameron asked.
Remy shook her head slightly, “nothing,” she said starting to get up. However, Cameron kept hold of her arms, keeping her from going anywhere.
“What is it?” The blonde asked again. Remy swallowed thickly, her mouth was suddenly dry, her lips parched. She ran her tongue over them slightly. Cameron squeezed her hands, urging her to say something...anything.
“It's just...” Remy murmured, “you are incredibly beautiful.”
She waited for Cameron to say something but the blonde simply stared back at her, her gaze thoughtful.
Remy was about to apologize again for saying something out of turn when Cameron finally spoke.
“Thank you,” she said quietly. Before Remy could pull away, Cameron leaned up, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek.
Remy felt light-headed as a smile graced her lips. She was about to say thank you in return when she felt something vibrate against her thigh.
Cameron jumped, nearly bucking Remy off of her. Remy climbed off quickly, allowing Cameron to get to her phone. She flipped it open, it was another text.
'How about dinner then? Please?'
Cameron sighed.
“What is it?” Remy asked, now sitting at the other end of the couch.
“It's Chase,” Cameron said simply, “he asked me to lunch earlier but I told him I was having lunch with you and now he wants to have dinner.”
Remy nodded but didn't say anything.
“I think I owe it to him to go.” Cameron said, still looking at her phone. Remy nodded again and stood.
“Well I'll take you to your car.” She said, moving towards the kitchen to grab her keys.
“Wait Remy,” Cameron said. Remy stopped and turned toward her. “I could have him pick me up here. I mean if that's ok.” Remy didn't say anything so Cameron continued. “That way we could have a little more time to,” she laughed and put her hands up in quotations, “hang out.”
A small smile slid across Remy's face. “Alright,” she said, moving to sit back down next to Cameron who was texting Chase back with the address. Remy grabbed the TV remote and put her feet up on the coffee table. She turned to Cameron and smiled, “let's see what kind of mindless drivel we can find huh?” Cameron smiled back and nodded, slipping her phone back in her pocket. As Remy started to flip through the channels Cameron nestled gently into the younger girls side, leaning her head against Remy's shoulder.
They stayed that way until Cameron's phone vibrated again, signaling Chase's arrival. They sighed simultaneously, then laughed. Remy got up and held out her hand to help Cameron up. They left Remy's apartment and got in the elevator, hands still clasped.
Remy walked Cameron to the front door of her building, wondering all the while just what was going on with the blonde doctor. Cameron was thinking the same thing herself. They paused at the door and Cameron gave Remy's hand a squeeze.
“I had a lot of fun today.” She said.
“Me too.” Remy said, smiling gently at the blonde.
Cameron smiled back and, with one last squeeze, she slipped her hand from Remy's.
Remy watched her make her way quickly to Chase's car. It had started to rain. She waited until they pulled away, then made her way outside. She stood on the steps, simply feeling the rain, breathing it in, living.
She took a deep breath and smiled.
“Maybe I've got something to live for after all.”
“I hope you don't mind, I picked out a place already.” Chase said, breaking the silence that had descended since Cameron had gotten in the car.
“That's fine.” She said distractedly, staring out the window.
“I actually had to pull some strings to get in on such late notice.” He continued, trying to gain some of the blonde's attention.
Cameron turned to her, him eyebrows furrowed.
“This place doesn't have a dress code does it?” She said, looking down at her attire. “I don't think I'm dressed for that.”
“Don't worry,” Chase said, smiling, “I'm sure I can take care of it.”
When they arrived at the restaurant Cameron did a double take.
“Here?” She asked. “We're eating here?”
“You love this place.” Chase replied, unbuckling his seatbelt.
“I...I do,” Cameron replied, “but this is where you proposed to me.”
Chase turned to her smiling, “I know.”
Cameron smiled back weakly and got out of the car.
Once in the restaurant the hostess led them to a very secluded booth, with candles around it that Cameron was sure were not part of the usual décor.
They were seated and began looking at their menus. Cameron could hardly focus on the food choices. Her mind was reeling from Chase's blatant attempt at getting back together with her. If this was his idea of 'falling back in love' then he was sorely mistaken.
Of course, Cameron relented, if they had still been together, this would have been incredibly romantic. Now, however, she longed to be back at Remy's apartment watching crappy television, or even back at the pizza parlor, defending her pepperoni from Invasion: Remy.
Cameron laughed at her inner monologue.
“What?” Chase asked curiously.
“Nothing,” Cameron said, still smiling. She could see the frustration in his well-defined features.
She was saved from explaining herself by their waiter.
Dinner came and went much to slowly for Cameron and all to quickly for Chase. As their plates were cleared Cameron was relieved that the awkwardness would soon be over, but Chase ordered dessert, prolonging her torture.
“Robert, what's going on?” She said finally, unable to stop herself anymore.
“What do you mean?” He said, though she could tell he knew exactly what she meant. She sighed.
“I thought you agreed with me, that we should have some space from each other.” She watched as his features darkened.
“So what are you saying?” He said, lowering his voice. “That we're through? That this is it?”
“I'm saying I don't know, Chase!” She said, trying to keep her voice low but failing miserably. A few of the other patrons glanced in their direction.
“So all of this. Everything I've done tonight, just means nothing to you, does it?” He was raising his voice now. This was the side of Chase that Cameron hated. The side that was all or nothing, the one that didn't take anything into account except himself.
“I told you, I needed space.” She said.
“Space?” He laughed a harsh barking laugh. “Well how are you getting space when you're being so cozy with Thirteen? Are you her new whore? That's what she does you know, picks girls up, sleeps with them then tosses them to the curb like garbage.”
Cameron couldn't help her hand as it flew across the table, slapping him soundly across the face.
“Don't you dare talk about her like that.” She said, her voice tight in her throat. She stood up, throwing her napkin down on the table. “We're through, Chase.” She turned and walked, as dignified as she could, out of the restaurant.
Once outside she stood in the rain for a few moments calming down. She reached into her pocket for her keys before realizing her car was at the hospital. She felt the beginnings of frustrated tears sting her eyes. She sat down on a bench, rain soaking through her clothes. Finally she pulled out her phone and flipped it open. She hesitated a few minutes before dialing.
Upon returning to her apartment Remy had resumed the position she'd been sitting in with Cameron, minus Cameron of course.
After watching a few episodes of some horribly inaccurate medical drama, she took a nap on the couch.
She was awoken, she didn't know how much later, by her phone buzzing on the coffee table. She snatched it and groggily looked at the number. She didn't recognize it and so debated on whether to answer it or not. She opted for the former and flipped it open.
“Hello?” She said, her voice thick with sleep.
“Oh my god, I woke you up didn't I. God I'm sorry, I'll go.”
“Cameron?” Remy said, still trying to clear her head of her sleep haze. It was quiet on the other end for a minute before Cameron's voice came quietly through.
“Yeah...” She said.
“How did you get my number?” Remy would later kick herself for having this be the first question she asked.
“I called the hospital.” Remy thought she heard Cameron sniffle a little.
“Is everything ok?” Silence again.
“No...no it's not.” Cameron was definitely crying now. Remy sat up straight, suddenly feeling very awake. “Can you come get me?”
Remy was off the phone and in her car quicker than she could ever remember doing it. She glanced down at the address Cameron had given her. She squinted through the rain, hoping that Cameron wasn't out in it, but she'd brought a jacket and a towel just in case.
She pulled up in front of the restaurant to see that her fear was confirmed. She jumped out of the car, jacket in hand and ran over to the bench where Cameron seemed to be in a daze. Remy wrapped the jacket around her and helped her up and into the car. Once inside, Remy replaced the jacket with the towel and helped the blonde to dry off for a few minutes before heading back to her apartment. It was pretty clear that Cameron was in no state to be alone and if she were honest with herself, Remy would admit that she didn't want Cameron to be alone right now either.
They made their way into Remy's building and into the elevator, all the while Remy kept one arm around the blonde, rubbing her for warmth.
Once inside Remy disappeared into her bedroom but quickly reappeared with a set of very warm looking pajamas.
She led Cameron to the bathroom and set the clothes down on the counter. The blonde still hadn't said a word since Remy picked her up.
“Do you need me to help you?” Remy asked tentatively. She watched as Cameron managed a small smile and shook her head. “Ok,” Remy said backing towards the door, “well just change into those and I'll make sure your clothes get washed.” Cameron nodded as Remy continued, “you're gonna stay here tonight.” It wasn't forceful, it was just a reassurance. Cameron nodded again and Remy left, closing the door behind her.
While Cameron changed Remy quickly went about her bedroom, straightening things, cleaning up a bit. She was grateful she'd just changed the sheets. She heard the bathroom door open and footsteps coming towards her bedroom. She turned and saw Cameron peek her head in.
“Hey,” Remy said gently.
“Hey,” Cameron replied, her voice quiet. She stood there awkwardly holding her wet clothes.
“Oh, you can throw those in that hamper there.” Remy said, pointing towards the basket. Cameron nodded and did so. She turned around and didn't say anything but made her way towards Remy. The brunette remained still as Cameron tentatively wrapped her arms around her, enveloping her in a hug. Remy hesitated a moment before wrapping her arms around the blonde, hugging her back. Cameron rested her head on Remy's shoulder and sighed heavily.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Remy felt Cameron shake her head. “Ok.” She said. “Why don't you climb in the bed, I'm gonna go ahead and change.” Cameron nodded and slowly let go of the taller girl before making her way to the bed.
Remy grabbed some sweats and headed into her bathroom. She came back out wearing the same tank top as that day and the sweats. She tossed her jeans and suspenders over the back of a chair before going and climbing in on the other side of the bed from Cameron. Remy turned her bedside lamp down to low. She figured that would be more comforting to Cameron than pitch black.
Cameron was turned away from her, but she slowly moved so that she was facing Remy. She lay there, regarding the brunette. Remy simply lay there, her eyes never leaving Cameron. She saw the blonde's forehead crinkle slightly.
“What is it?” Remy whispered. Cameron met her gaze, Remy thought she looked beautiful...but vulnerable at the same time.
“Will you hold me?”
Remy's heart leapt into her throat. She swallowed and nodded. Cameron moved over and put an arm over Remy's waist. Remy moved onto her back and lifted up her arm so Cameron could put her head on her shoulder, before wrapping her arm around Cameron's back.
Remy couldn't imagine that her heart would slow down enough for her to get to sleep, but before she knew it Cameron's steady breathing had lulled her into a doze.
Remy stretched, feeling her limbs give and groan. She was mid-stretch, arms and legs all splayed about, when she realized she was alone in bed. She looked around the bedroom quickly before getting up and heading out to the living room and kitchen. Cameron was nowhere to be found.
Remy felt her heart sink in her chest. She internally berated herself, 'you didn't actually think she'd still be here, did you?'
It was then that she spotted the note on the counter.
Remy,
Thank you.
