Challenge:
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn your music player on and turn it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble/ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.
Pairing: Cameron/Thirteen
Rating: PG-13
Words: 2962
A/N: I confess, I lingered a little. I'm too OCD to leave things hanging!!!
1. It's My Life - Bon Jovi
Thirteen slammed her locker door shut. She'd had it with House and his stupid comments; Foreman and his pity or sympathy or whatever it was; Cameron and her...her happiness, all the time and her savior complex or whatever it was. It wasn't like the blonde had tried to save her, no, not one bit. Maybe if she had, maybe if she'd given a damn, then maybe...maybe this wouldn't be it.
The hallways were near empty, the day had come and gone. Thirteen stalked to the elevators and jammed her hand onto the button. Her eyes found the ceiling of the elevator as it started to move, jaw clenched, leg bouncing. As the doors opened she stepped out, right into Foreman.
“Hey, what-” he started.
“Just shove it! I'm sick of your puppy dog eyes and everything else that goes with them!” It was a pointless rampage, she knew but she was at the end of her rope. She shoved him aside and made her way towards House's office. He was standing at his desk putting a coat on when she stormed in. He paused with one arm halfway through the sleeve.
“You are an asshole.” He went to speak but she held up her hand to stop him, “un uh, I'm talking. I know that you know you're an asshole. I also know that you like it. But at some point you're going to realize that you really and truly are an asshole. That there were things you should've cared about, things maybe you shouldn't have, things you could've kept yourself from saying but didn't. You're going to die a lonely death, just like everybody else, you're not special, you're just...an asshole.”
She didn't give him time to react, just turned and made her way back towards the elevators. She got in and stood there...up or down...up or down. She couldn't decide whether or not to skip out on going down to the ER where Cameron was still working or up...to the roof where she'd finally have peace. Someone decided for her as the elevator dinged and suddenly started down. The doors opened at the ER level and Thirteen didn't have to look long for Cameron at all, seeing as she was stepping onto the elevator. The blonde turned and held the door open for Thirteen, who stood there unmoving.
“Dr. Hadley?” She said tentatively, “aren't you getting off?”
Thirteen shook her head, her throat was suddenly parched, her mouth dry as cotton. She couldn't form the words she wanted to say.
“Oh,” Cameron said quietly, “well what floor are you going to?” Her hand hovered over the round numbered buttons.
“Roof.” Thirteen managed. Cameron nodded and pushed the button for the top floor.
“You know you have to take the stairs to actually get onto the roof right?” She said.
“I know!” Thirteen snapped. Cameron was taken aback.
“What's going on? Is everything ok?” She asked gently.
“I hate you.” Thirteen said, her jaw clenched. A look of hurt passed over Cameron's face.
“Why would you say that?” She said quietly.
“Because I do!” Thirteen said, rounding on her, “I hate how you're always so happy, even though you're surrounded by sickness and death! I hate how you always have to be saving someone from something.” Thirteen wiped at her eyes angrily, tears leaking from them.
“I...I'm sorry.” It sounded more like a question than an actual apology. Thirteen took no heed.
“You know what I hate most of all?” The brunette said, calming down slightly, “I hate that there has been someone in dire need of saving right in front of you...and you haven't done a damn thing about it.”
“Who?” Cameron asked, puzzled.
“Me.”
2. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
Cameron stood in the middle of the ER, the world seemed to be going in slow motion as bodies moved around her. She couldn't believe what she was seeing, teenagers, dozens of them being wheeled in, most in critical condition. High school shooting. She knew she should be doing something but her body wouldn't move. She saw House's team rush off the elevator to assist. She didn't notice Dr. Hadley approach her. She barely felt the hand on her shoulder.
“Dr. Cameron.” Cameron turned, her vision hazy, and tried to bring the pretty brunette's face into focus. “Come on,” the younger doctor ran her hand down Cameron's arm to her hand and squeezed, “you're gonna be ok, just focus ok? These kids need you. Focus.” With that last word Cameron snapped back to reality. She released Dr. Hadley's hand and bolted off to the nearest exam room, grabbing supplies on the way.
6 hours later Cameron stood leaning against the nurse's station, her head in her hands. She felt a familiar hand on her shoulder. Thinking back she's not sure why it was familiar, seeing as it had only been there the one time. She turns, regardless, to face Dr. Hadley, who, like earlier, runs her hand down Cameron's arm to grasp the blonde doctor's hand.
“Come on,” she says, motioning towards the elevators, the locker room, a hot shower and clean clothes, Cameron thinks longingly. She registers that Dr. Hadley is smiling kindly at her. “You're gonna be ok.”
3. Torn - Natalie Imbruglia
Cameron idly moves her salad around in it's container. She feels arms wrap around her and a voice whispers in her ear.
“I cannot wait to get you home and out of those clothes.”
She sighs heavily. Chase. He used to make her happy. Now, it seems like the only thing he wants is sex and arm candy.
“I have to work late tonight.” She says, not bothering to turn around and look at him. He pulls out a seat next to her.
“Come on Allison, you've worked every night this week. Take a break, come over, let me treat you.”
His words are sweet but the way his eyes darken and the way treat you rolls off his tongue, it's obvious his plans are not sweet.
“Sorry Chase.” She says still not really looking at him. He mutters something as he gets up and pushes the chair in roughly. Minutes after he has gone someone else sits down next to her.
“You don't love him anymore do you?”
Cameron's head snaps up to see Dr. Hadley sitting next to her, thoughtfully picking on her fruit salad.
“Why would you say that?” Cameron asks, trying to sound offended when really...it's the truth.
“Why wouldn't I?” Hadley asks. “You're not happy Cameron, anyone can see it.” She says gently, trying to meet the blonde's eyes. “Take it from someone with not a whole lot of time left. Do what makes you happy, don't waste time trying to fix something that's never going to work. Try new things.”
Cameron regards Hadley curiously.
“Have you always been this insightful or is it just the Huntington's?” She jokes lightly. Hadley looks up, a smile playing on her lips. “What?” Cameron asks, feeling her mood somehow lifting.
“I want to take you to dinner.” Hadley says. Cameron is slightly taken aback.
“Like...a date?” She asks, internally processing this exciting new idea.
“Yeah...like a date.” Hadley replies.
“Pick me up at 6.” Cameron says, clearing her tray.
“Don't you have work?” Hadley asks. Cameron turns to her.
“You were right, I'm not happy. I haven't had to work a night shift since last Tuesday.”
Hadley smiles. “It's a date.”
4. Barely Breathing - Duncan Sheik
Remy enters the on-call room to find Cameron seemingly sobbing on one of the beds. She hesitates, debating whether or not she should slowly back out or just do what she came in here to do...which was sleep.
She opted for the latter, slowly approaching the blonde doctor.
“Dr. Cameron?” She asks gently. Cameron looks up at her with red eyes.
“Oh, sorry,” she says, getting up off the bed.
“No, no it's ok.” Remy says, motioning for her to sit back down. “Are you ok?”
Cameron shakes her head, no.
Remy sighs lightly, not knowing really what to do.
“Is there anything I can do?”
Cameron looks up her again. She seems to thinking over something in her head.
“Can I just lay here with you?” She says, seeing the confused look on Remy's face she continues, “I just...I need someone to hold me right now...can you...would...” She stops, tears clouding her vision.
Before she can move Remy's arms are wrapping gently around her, pulling her to lay down next to the brunette. Cameron relaxes a little a Remy grabs a blanket off a nearby shelf and throws it over them, never saying a word. They lay there for a few minutes silently before Cameron squirms a little, then rolls over in Remy's arms. Their noses graze slightly. Cameron sighs contentedly before brushing her lips over Remy's. “Thank you.”
5. Wonderwall - Oasis
Remy leans down and ties her shoes, straightening her pant legs as she does. As she stands she pushes the wrinkles from her blouse and adjusts her suspenders. She puts her lab coat in her locker and grabs her coat. She watches from the corner of her eye as Cameron exits the room. Taking a deep breath Remy follows after her, trailing her at a distance. She reminds herself that this isn't creepy, following Cameron like this, what she has to do...well it just has to be done outside.
Remy looks up at the stars and feels the chill in the air. Taking one last deep breath she calls out to Cameron. The blonde doctor turns around and regards Remy curiously as the brunette approaches her.
“Remy,” she says, “is everything alright?”
Remy shrugs, “yes and no.” Cameron's eyebrows furrow with concern.
“I'm in love with you.” Remy blurts out, laughing slightly. “I am madly in love with you.” Cameron takes a step back, speechless. Remy laughs again. “Don't worry, I'm not trying to get anywhere with you. I just...I'm dying and you know that and I feel like...I'm not gonna hide things anymore. I'm not gonna not try for things. So I just...I had to tell you, because you are an amazing, beautiful, intelligent, kind person and you should know that.”
“Thank you,” Cameron says meekly. Feeling bold, Remy takes a couple of steps and closes the gap between them.
“It's like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” she says quietly. Cameron barely registers that one of Remy's hands is on her hip. “I'm sorry, in advanced but like I said, I'm not gonna not try for things.”
Remy's lips are soft against hers, soft but full of a passion that Cameron has never felt in a kiss before. One of Remy's hands is gently holding the back of her head and Cameron feels her own hands moving up to cup Remy's face.
When they finally pull apart Cameron's not sure if she's seeing stars in the sky or stars because of how mind blowing that one kiss was. She bites her lip slightly.
“Thank you.” Remy whispers before kissing her forehead. She turns to go but Cameron feels herself yearning to stop her.
“Remy.” She says, grabbing the brunette's hands. “Did you mean all those things you said about me?” Remy smiles.
“All those things and more.” Cameron blushes but manages a smile.
“Maybe you should try for more things.”
6. Everything You Want - Vertical Horizon
“What do you want from me Allison?”
They're at his place, Cameron's things are half-packed, half-strewn across the floor.
“I don't know Robert!” She says exasperatedly, “I don't know.” His face falls even further. She'd called him that evening, out of the blue, told him they needed to talk. The talk had escalated to Cameron telling him that she didn't want to marry him anymore, in fact she didn't want to date him anymore either. And truthfully...she didn't know what she wanted. The fact of the matter was...he didn't make her happy any more and it wasn't anything he was doing or wasn't doing. He was a great man, who would make some other woman very, very happy someday...just not her.
“I'm sorry.” She says, collecting the rest of her things. She goes to the door and opens it, turning back to him one last time. “I'm sorry.” The door closes and she hopes he doesn't look out the window.
Remy's waiting by her car. She takes one of Cameron's bags and puts it in the trunk.
“You ok?” She says gently.
“I will be.” Cameron says, handing Remy the other bag.
“How do you know?” Remy says, closing the trunk. Cameron grabs her hand and pulls Remy to her. She kisses the brunette lightly.
“Because,” she says simply, “you make me happy.”
7. Absolutely (Story of a Girl) - Nine Days
Cameron glances around Remy's apartment as she waits for the brunette to shower. There aren't very many pictures but, of the few there are, Remy doesn't look very happy in them. She's smiling but the smile doesn't reach her eyes. It isn't the smile that Cameron's become so accustomed to seeing.
She turns, hearing the bedroom door open. Remy walks out in jeans and a tank.
“Ready?” She asks, toweling her hair dry. Cameron nods and walks over to her. She places her hands on Remy's hips and kisses the brunette soundly on the lips. She pulls back and watches as Remy's eyes flutter open, a smile gracing her features. “What was that for?”
Cameron shrugs slightly and kisses her again.
“I missed your smile.”
8. Wine Red - The Hush Sound
“Dr. Hadley!” Cameron rushes along side the gurney. She'd nearly had a panic attack when she heard the call come in, female, mid to late 20s, hospital employee, last name...Hadley, gun shot wound to chest. “Dr. Hadley!” She says again, trying to gain the attention of a nearly unresponsive Hadley.
“She has a name you know.” There's a girl who came in with her. Cameron already doesn't like her.
“Yes thank you, I know.” She says, her tone clipped. “Remy, Remy can you hear me?”
“I was there when it happened you know.” The girl is speaking again. “It was my boyfriend, he gets a little jealous sometimes.” She says non-nonchalantly. Cameron's head whips up as she glares at the girl.
“Nurse,” she says, not taking her eyes off the girl, “get her out of here.”
“Cameron?” She looks down to see Remy's eyes open slightly. “Did I get shot?”
Cameron feels relief shoot through her. “Yeah, you did.” She answers. “Did you know your girlfriend has a...boyfriend?” Remy smiles tightly.
“Should've known,” she says, wincing in pain, “the good ones are always taken.”
Cameron laughs as they wheel Remy into an exam room.
“She wasn't a good one Remy,” She smiles, “you're a good one and you're not taken.”
Remy smiles back slightly.
“Would you like to?”
Cameron wishes that day had gone a whole lot differently.
She wishes she'd had faster hands.
She wishes she could've stopped the bleeding.
She wishes Remy's heart would've kept beating just a little while longer.
She wishes she could've answered her.
She would've said yes.
9. I Dare You To Move - Switchfoot
Usually, this is her spot.
Usually, this is where she goes to be alone.
Usually, a certain blonde ER doctor isn't having a horrible day.
“Hey, I've got kind of a special spot here at the hospital. It always makes me feel better.” She'd said. “You wanna go?”
Usually, she plans ahead and brings her coat.
Usually, if she forgets her coat, it just herself that needs warming up.
Usually, she doesn't find herself wrapped around Cameron trying to warm the shivering doctor up.
“I feel like I can do anything up here.” Cameron had said wistfully, her pains and worries melting off of her despite the cold.
“Like what?” Remy had replied.
Usually, Remy is out of her mind drunk when she's kissing a girl this beautiful.
Usually, she wouldn't have the guts to admit that yes, she does think Cameron is beautiful.
Usually, she wakes up the next morning to cold sheets and an even colder heart.
Usually...
10. Face Down - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Thirteen couldn't understand why Cameron put up with it. It's not like she was dating House. But day in and day out she took his verbal abuse, without so much as a flicker of pain in her eyes. Already Thirteen's own rope was getting short when it came to House. Then one day it happened, House had made an unusually bitter comment about her late husband and Thirteen saw the hurt on the blonde's face. She stood up suddenly, drawing the attention in the room to herself, away from Cameron.
“Does it make you feel like more of a man when you put her down like that?” She said, angrily.
House seemed to be pondering the question, “yes, it does. Hey, if you decide to switch back to chicks you can try it, make yourself more manly.”
Thirteen growled and stalked up to him.
“Leave Cameron alone you sad, pitiful excuse for a human being.” House just laughed.
“You're not trying to get into her pants are you?”
“No.” Thirteen said firmly. “I love her too much to do that.”
