monday's little detour to the hospital

It’s been far too long since I updated this thing. My only excuse is that the awards ate my brain. They are kind of like zombies that way, I guess, because once I’m done with them I don’t have any desire to even *look* at a computer anymore. I keep hearing that the ‘hard’ part is over, though, and it hasn’t been too hard- just tedious and time consuming. Anyway, on to bigger and better topics.

Honored Friend and I were taking the kids to the zoo on Monday, stopped by the hospital to turn in her badge from her latest rotation, and were just shy of leaving the parking garage when there was a knocking beneath her seat. That ‘knock’ quickly became a unique crash and drag screech type of noise which, I deduced in my own brilliant fashion, was likely not a good nor healthy thing for the Z-mobile or anyone riding in it. I stopped in the middle of the parking garage and got out to find my van had dropped several little steel balls covered in grease and they were rolling everywhere.

All said and done, I was really very lucky. If the coupling between the forward passenger wheel and the axle had blown while anywhere else… at the least I could have lost my transmission and/or van. At the worst, I could have lost the children. Or Honored Friend. Or some other mommy’s kids going to the visit Great Grandma Ida. Or… I was just pretty damned lucky.

It still sucked, though. Serious suckage, folks. Four hours with no form of entertainment inside a hospital with four children. Honored Friend resorted to playing Duck, Duck, Goose! In the lobby with the kids while I was trying to figure out how to get us home, if the insurance could get us a car big enough for all six of us and pay for it. In the end, I had to call Beloved Husband in the middle of his sleep cycle and have him come pick up Honored Friend and leave me with the children alone while they went to get her van. During this time, I gave up on trying to play games with the kids and found a gift shop to donate $22.64 to. In return, they donated four 8 packs of Crayons and four coloring books to the Keep Zee Sane Fund.

Got home to find poor wyns already at the house and thank goodness. We used *her* car to get some food.

The mechanic says he should actually have the Z mobile back to me sometime this afternoon, so that makes me hopeful. Extended warrantee, in this case, is worth every penny. My deductible is $100. That’s all this little adventure is going to cost me. I wonder if that covers the crayons, though.

Never did make it to the zoo.
