no promises, no demands

Dear co-workers,

No, not everything needs to be scheduled in the first week of January, NOR CAN IT BE. I am very good at my job but even I can't warp the space-time continuum to make more hours in a day!

no love,

me

On the other hand, boss1, boss2, and is-probably-my-boss-it's-still-not-really-clear took me to lunch today and while the burger was good, the blood orange sorbet I had for dessert was AMAZING. I have never had luck with my attempts at orange sherbet or sorbet and this was something to aspire to.

Day 4 of the January talking meme:

sholio asked: Is there a comic or book that hasn't been brought to live-action yet that you'd like to see adapted as a movie or TV show? What's your wish list for a movie or show based on it?

Ahahahaha! Oh my yes. GOTHAM CENTRAL AS AN HBO MINISERIES. WHY DOES IT NOT ALREADY EXIST? IT WOULD BE SO GREAT.

When they first announced the current "Gotham" TV show, and Renee Montoya was mentioned, I WAS SO EXCITED. GOTHAM CENTRAL ON MY TEEVEE! And then SO DISAPPOINTED when I heard the actual premise.

I feel like it will probably never happen now, since Gotham does exist and some version of Renee Montoya and Harvey Bullock are on that, and Maggie Sawyer is on Supergirl, and I just. I really wanted Homicide: Life on the Street but with occasional Batman (I mean, inasmuch as Pembleton isn't already Batman, and gosh could you imagine Andre Braugher as Batman? It would be so great. Speaking of which, every time one of those H+R Block commercials with Jon Hamm and the doughnuts comes on, I'm like, THAT IS BRUCE WAYNE. Jon Hamm will always physically be Bruce Wayne in my head though Batman will always sound like Kevin Conway.)

Think about it - a realistically gritty police procedural set in a world where Batman exists, from the POV not of the superhero, but the cops (both decent and crooked) who have to deal with costumed and sometimes superpowered criminals! But, like, smart and well-written. And then add Renee Montoya and partner Cris Allen as the stars, with Jim Gordon and Maggie Sawyer as the occasional supervisory presences, Josie Mac and the interchangeable non-Bullock white dude detectives (I honestly couldn't tell most of them apart for most of the comic except for Harvey), and some iconic Batman villains. Mr. Freeze! TWO-FACE. Gosh, in order to get in all the necessary backstory they could kick the series off with a two-part, four hour No Man's Land movie (featuring Helena's turn as the Batman ♥, and introducing CASSANDRA CAIN), and then instead of continuing on with the Batfam, they would switch to Renee as the lead, and then season 2 would be the Two-Face plotline.

Really, the only thing I would change would be Cris Allen's eventual fate. *hands*

If you haven't read Gotham Central, I highly, highly recommend it. It's complete and it's amazing.

The other comic I would desperately love to see a live-action version of is the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle, though I suppose Tyler Posey is probably too old now to really play Jaime. But gosh, that would be amazing. A teenage superhero with minimal angst, who doesn't hide his identity from his friends and family! He asks permission to go fight crime! He has a hilarious inappropriate mentor who is a white guy in the comics but I like to imagine Dwayne Johnson playing him on TV. Plus Paco and Brenda! MILAGRO! Tia Amparo! Special appearances by Tracy 13! Is it wrong that I'd want, like, Kelsey Grammer or David Hyde Pierce to voice Khaji Da? Because I think I would.

Blue Beetle vol 3. is also mostly self-contained - set in El Paso and therefore out of the way of most other superheroes - and only 36 issues long, so it also could be a good limited series, though if John Rogers (of Leverage fame), who wrote the bulk of the comic, could be the showrunner, I'd happily let him continue the story as long as he had good ideas.

Blue Beetle vol. 3 is also the only superhero comic I have ever recommended without caveat, so you know, you should read it. Jaime is a great kid and he has good friends and a supportive family and I love him a lot. I read it at the very start of my dive into superhero comics and nothing else has ever quite matched it, imo.
