and a conversation about nothing

As usual in a week where we have Monday off, I get confused as to which day it is, so here's reading Wednesday on a Thursday:

What I've recently finished reading:
Spin by Robert Charles Wilson, which I liked a lot. I never got emotionally attached to the characters, but I really wanted to know what was going on.

Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare, which I enjoyed. I think it's probably a good thing I remember very little about previous books, because apparently the hero here was really rapey in the last one? But since I didn't remember that until it was mentioned about ¾ of the way through here, it didn't bother me. *hands*

Shockaholic and The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher. I skipped Wishful Drinking since I'd just watched the show and didn't feel a need to rehash, especially since Shockaholic repeats some of the same material. But it does have some lovely bits about her experiences sitting vigil with dying friends, and how she finally got a relationship with her father, and also a friendship with Liz Taylor.

And The Princess Diarist had some fun stuff in it, though I found the actual excerpts from her diary as a 19yo excruciating to read. I mean, I've been 19 and hopelessly hooking up with a dude who was never going to leave his girlfriend for me (though not, obviously, a dude in Harrison Ford's league! ha!), so maybe it was just that resonance that made me feel like I could skim most of it after the first few entries and poems. Oh yes, there's poetry. Yeah. She says she knows what Leia - and by extension, she herself - means to women (different from what she means to men), and I really hope that was the case, because she meant a lot. A LOT.

What I'm reading now:
Nothing yet. I literally finished The Princess Diarist on the train this morning and didn't start anything new.

What I'm reading next:
Probably a romance novel or something light and fluffy. I don't read a lot of celebrity bios or books, so that was more than enough for me and I'm probably going to watch Postcards from the Edge this weekend because MERYL! SHIRLEY! and save reading it for some later date.

I was going to do that year-end book meme, but I couldn't get the number of authors to equal the number of books, even when adding in the repeat authors, so I gave up rather than spending more time on it, since I don't tag for demographic info. I will say that the majority of books I read this year were by women, though I definitely need to read more books by people of color. Only ~10 out of 102 is not a good percentage.

So after my lovely lunch yesterday, L. and I went out for our traditional holiday dinner last night, which was also lovely, though the sangria was sour (what is with my bad sangria luck lately?) so we ordered a Sprite and poured it into the sangria which improved it immensely. You gotta do what you gotta do, right?

Then I came home and enjoyed the Rangers rebounding from a terrible loss the night before by beating the Flyers. Always a good time. *g*

And now, more work. Ugh.
