I met up with L and M for a late lunch/early dinner this afternoon, and it was so nice to talk to people who are really supportive of my writing, even if it is not necessarily their thing. L's been a cheerleader for me since the XMM days (SIXTEEN YEARS JESUS H. CHRIST HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?) despite not being in fandom and M is a published novelist who writes thrillers and horror, so she doesn't judge.

Since I'd already walked all the way over to Madison for that, I decided to go down to the Apple Store afterward, since yesterday at lunchtime my iPad finally gave up the ghost after five and half years of yeoman's service. I knew exactly what I wanted (the iPad Air 2 with 128GB storage) but I didn't know if I wanted gold or silver (I am sad the pink rose gold only comes in the Pro, but I don't need the Pro and don't need to pay an extra $200 for pink) - I was leaning towards gold based on the website, but in person I didn't like it as much - I think it'd probably be fine at phone size but it was too much at iPad size.

While the nice young sales associate was helping me - it took longer at the height of a Saturday afternoon than my laptop purchase this past July, which was at around 11 am on a Sunday - Christine Baranski wandered over to look at the iPads. CHRISTINE BARANSKI! SHE LOOKED FANTASTIC. The manager - or, at least, somebody who looked older and dressier than the rest of the sales associates - came over to talk to her as my credit card was being swiped. As soon as I walked out, I started texting people that I'd just seen CHRISTINE BARANSKI IN THE APPLE STORE. Just living that NYC life, I guess.

Then I came home and I've just spent the past two hours trying to activate the damn thing. Now, I know my AppleID and password etc., and I have iCloud backup, but here's a tip: do not use the iCloud backup to restore the new iPad as if it's the old iPad. Let my experience be your cautionary tale.

So it asked me if I wanted to restore Robin from iCloud backup from the last backup (i.e., yesterday) or treat it as a brand new iPad, and like an idiot, I said, "restore from iCloud backup!" All my passwords and apps and downloaded content would transfer over, I thought, and how long could it possibly take? There was only 16GB of space on the old one, and it wasn't near full.

Well, forty minutes later it was still telling me all the apps were 'waiting' and nothing was downloading and ugh, I just have no patience for that. (I did try that "check for downloads" trick in iTunes but it did not work). Clearly I made the same mistake Bruce Wayne did and tried to fit my new iPad into the old Robin's mold and it wasn't working out for either of us!

So I did the "erase all settings" thing and started over. Which worked fine after it downloaded an upgrade to the OS and made me do all the logging in again. Then I had to remember what apps I actually use regularly - which is all the reading apps! including the NYPL app! Comixology! Marvel Unlimited! Dropbox! Seamless! and that's about it actually. Nothing else I ever downloaded got used regularly, so I am just letting them go. But I had to remember or look up the passwords for everything, which was annoying. Ugh. Passwords. oh, and I dl'd some random pretty wallpapers app because the choices that came with the iPad were not doing it for me. So there's that.

And I named the new iPad Nightwing because it's five and half years later and Robin gets to grow up! (I did consider "Flash" for a brief moment, but then I was like, "is it Wally or Barry?" and then I was like, "It could be Irey?" and then I was like, "No, let it be Nightwing." My phone is Bucky Cap and my kindle is Oracle, so.)

And now I'm going to shop for a new case for it! I am excite!
