and you're grieving but don't hurry

That was some enjoyable Tuesday night tv:

The Flash: The Darkness and the Light
That was a fun episode, though I have some minor quibbles (mostly I don't like what they're doing with Jay's characterization).

Yay! Dr. Light was not a creepy rapist! I hope they can get Earth-2 Linda Park on side with the heroes. That'd be cool. The fact that Zoom knew to send her though leads me to believe that if Zoom isn't Earth-2!Barry, he's someone close to him (his dad? Wally? Eddie?). I did enjoy that moment where Iris, Linda, and Patty were all there and nobody made any snide or sly comment about Barry's dating choices. While I'm not 100% on board with Patty - she still seems awfully convenient not to be a plant - the date was adorable. Ugh, how is Grant Gustin so ridiculously charming? And Cisco! CURSE YOUR DOPENESS VIBE! Hee! Plus, he is going to get his heart broken by Hawkgirl! Aw.

Earth-2!Harrison Wells isn't evil (maybe) but he sure is a dick. Wow. I mean, I knew it had to have something to do with his daughter (she's not dead! She's actually Jesse Quick! Which could be very cool!) But he sure ramped up the energy level in the lab. I enjoyed his fight with Jay. (I'm less sanguine over how they're using Jay, and I'm not even all that attached to comics!Jay. Like, you're a superhero, dude! Don't walk out on someone who is surely going to need your help! What the hell!?) Also, Jay knows someone on Atlantis! OUTRAGEOUS. (I suppose it could be Garth or Kaldur or even Mera but if Arthur shows up, I hope he's more like The Brave and the Bold!Aquaman than regular Aquaman.)

So was that stupid watch not pinging for Caitlin confirmation that it's Earth-2's Caitlin who will be Killer Frost?

iZombie: Love and Basketball
Ha! Yet another VMars reference! Don't overdo it, though, show.

I kept waiting for Rita/Gilda to walk in on the Liv/Major makeouts, but I guess Liv telling her (and her immediately stabbing Liv) undercut that melodrama a little.

Re: those Liv/Major makeouts, "sounds to me like our problems could be solved with rock salt and condoms." hee! Otoh, why didn't Major say he'd been cured of zombieism and probably couldn't contract it again? Though of course, safety measures should still be employed. Plus, now he's coaching a squad of tween bballers. Aw, Major. Enjoy it while it lasts, because I'm sure it's going to all fall apart shortly.

Clive! Getting his own storyline! Is that going to be Alan York's brain? I realize Suzuki is probably not in that price range, but otoh, don't you slip your police contacts who are covering for you some of the good stuff on occasion? Idek.

Ravi was a joy and a treasure tonight. FIGHTING WITH BLAINE. FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE. BOBA RATT. HAVING BANIA AS HIS NEMESIS.

And now it's time for Wednesday morning books:

What I've just finished
Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge, which I highly, highly recommend. Not just a super creepy story about a girl who wakes up after an illness and everything is subtly off (though it is really creepy) but also a really interesting take on the breakdown of old social institutions in the wake of WWI and the movement of people from the countryside to the cities. It has a great sisterly relationship and three excellent main female characters. With an interesting take on fairy magic.

Ladies Day Out by SL Huang, a Cas Russell short in which Cas teaches Pilar to shoot, and then Root of Unity, the third full-length novel in the series. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two, not just because I didn't quite grasp some of the mathematical stuff they were discussing, but also because Cas takes a hell of a beating and I don't generally enjoy that? At least none of the violence directed at her was sexual or personal in nature? I guess if you enjoy h/c where it's all h and no c, or you are a fan of whump, this might work better for you, but that's not my beautiful cake. *hands* I'll still read the next one, I guess.

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart. This is a historical novel based on a real lady who became one of the first female deputy sheriffs in the US in 1915. It was blurbed as a 'romp' but I don't think the person who wrote that understands what a romp is, because this was not one. I dunno. I felt like there was a heavy, pervasive sense of dread hanging over this whole book because of the threats of sexual violence against Fleurette, and also the demonstration of how awful society can be to young women who are on their own, especially back in the early twentieth century. I was expecting a fun lady detective novel and I got a slow historical novel and so I can't say I enjoyed it much, but that's probably mostly due to my expectations not being met. I think if you're expecting a historical novel, it probably works better.

What I'm reading now
Moonlight Palace by Liz Rosenberg, which is a historical coming of age novel set in Singapore after WWI. This was one of those monthly free books from Amazon, so I don't have a lot of expectations, but so far it's pretty good.

What I'm reading next
Don't know, but I do know that I've read 103 books this year, and there's still two months to go, so go me!
