i've got the sun at my back, and the world in my sights
Last night, 
fox1013 and I went to see the 17 minute preview of Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't really understand what the point was of having a 17 minute preview screening at an IMAX 3D theatre (surely that cost money for both Disney/Marvel and the theatre owners? though I guess the latter recoup concession money, and they only lose ~1 hour of theatre time), but if it was supposed to take me from indifferent at best to "yeah, okay, I'll see this movie" then I guess it worked. It was a very fun 17 minutes, though mostly I'm still in a really irate "they made a movie about a gun-toting raccoon and a sentient tree before they made a movie about Natasha or Carol or Jan" place. And I stand by that. (Even more so in the case of Ant-Man, a movie nobody wants about a guy nobody likes. Well, no, I have nothing against Scott Lang, because Cassie! but ugh Hank Pym is the worst.) I don't care what anyone says. The fact that this movie stars another cute white guy (named Chris) instead of a woman is always going to rub me the wrong way. But my belief that the soundtrack would be cool was borne out, so there's that. *hands*
While we were waiting for it to start, the gentleman in the seat next to us overheard us talking about SHIELD and we agreed that it had been hamstrung both by having to wait for Cap 2 and also by being in the 8 pm timeslot. He said his 11yo daughter loved it but that it might have been held back a bit by trying to be more family friendly. Which is a possibility, though we've all seen kids' shows that are willing to get complex (the gold standard of which will forever be AtLA for me, though it too was occasionally hamstrung by being a half-hour cartoon for kids). We agreed though that the revelation of Ward being HYDRA was brilliant - clearly the best thing the show's done. And not walking that back (at least for now) pleases me.
For those of you playing the home game, this means YES, WARD IS A NAZI. PLEASE STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR HIM AND HIS HORRIFYING LIFE CHOICES. AND ALSO PLEASE STOP COMPARING HIM TO BUCKY, WHO WAS MINDWIPED AND BRAINWASHED AND HAD NO CHOICE IN WORKING FOR HYDRA. AND AS SOON AS HE DID HAVE A CHOICE, HE CHOSE TO SAVE STEVE. WARD CHOSE TO DROP FITZ AND SIMMONS INTO THE OCEAN TO DIE. SO STFU. (Yes, Ward had an abusive childhood. That is not a excuse to keep working with an evil organization. He had choices and he consistently made the WRONG ONES. See Natasha, who eventually chose to get out of a similar situation and join what she thought was the good guys. Which means that you can hope for Ward's redemption eventually, but that he's got a long way to go before he gets there.)
HYDRA IS (and I quote Cap 2) "THE NAZI ROGUE SCIENCE DIVISION." THEY MAY NO LONGER LOOK LIKE NAZIS ON THE SURFACE BUT THEY ARE STILL NAZIS, GUIDED BY ZOLA, A NAZI SCIENTIST. (this is why I'm still sad they didn't get to use Coulson instead of Sitwell in the movie. That would have been BEAUTIFUL. And made more sense for the white guy than the Latino guy.) Ugh, fandom, every time I think you've hit rock bottom I learn that no, there's a lower place.
Anyway, I've mostly avoided that discussion on tumblr, but it just makes me so ragey. Oh, fandom, no.
