when they decided they would try to make it on their own

Apparently yesterday was the 20th anniversary (!!!) of Speed being released: Still Traveling At 50 MPH 20 Years Later: Why 'Speed' Was The Pinnacle Of '90s Action Movies, and also an interview with Joss Whedon about how he rewrote the script but had the credit taken away from him by the WGA.

Guys, I can't even tell you how much I love Speed. I watched it every night for a month when it came out on tape (yes, VHS). I have what you might call a Keanu Reeves situation and this movie only exacerbated it (I also watched The Matrix every night for a month and also every time HBO showed it when it first came out). I mean, I still think the extra bit at the end with the subway is overkill and unnecessary, but generally speaking, it is an excellent action movie, and while not quite at the top tier of the pantheon with Die Hard or the Terminator movies (1 & 2, anyway), it's definitely in my top five. Also, I kind of totally ship Keanu and Sandra Bullock because of this movie. I am just saying.

What I've just finished

I did pick up The Staff of Serapis by Rick Riordan, and I enjoyed it, though I have to say, I spent twenty years riding the A train into Queens and I don't think the ride was ever as short as it seems in the story. But it's Annabeth and Sadie teaming up, which was fun, and there was an excerpt from the upcoming The Blood of Olympus at the end, so that was good. And I hope that after this particular series is over, we get the crossover series the two crossover short stories have hinted at. Because that would be awesome.

I also reread The Last Camel Died at Noon, which is the Peabody homage to King Solomon's Mines, which I enjoyed, but given later events, I'm even less charmed by Ramses' immediate attachment to Nefret than I was previously. (I skipped over Deeds of the Disturber because I remember disliking it intensely. It's the first time Percy shows up, right? And takes place all in England? Yeah, I didn't like that one at all.)

What I'm reading now

That meant I didn't make any progress with The Storm of War. *hands*

I also started The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog, which is definitely the one where Sethos' lady companion kidnaps Emerson (and possibly Sethos impersonates Cyrus? The details are foggy).

What I'm reading next

After that I will probably not be able to stop myself from continuing on to The Hippopotamus Pool, where David is finally introduced, and Seeing a Large Cat, which might be my favorite in the series. I guess we'll see.

Last night, L. and I went to a bar in my neighborhood which has a $12 beer and burger special, which is a great deal, and the burger was excellent. Would recommend!
