Steve's promised Pepper that he's actually going to bring a date to her birthday party - she says she has a couple of Natasha-approved candidates if he's interested - but then there's Doombots and the Serpent Society, and an unexpected side trip to Jotunheim, and he hasn't asked anyone.

He gets out of the shower and finds Bucky sitting at his kitchen table, eating a slice of cold pizza and drinking a beer.

"I didn't know you were getting back today," he says.

Bucky shrugs. "I didn't either, but things happened fast, and here I am."

"Good. You can come with me to Pepper's birthday party tonight."

"Well, at least I know the liquor'll be top shelf."

So they show up together and Pepper looks surprised for a moment, and Steve is ready to defend himself, because he doesn't like to break his word to anyone but especially not a friend and Pepper's been lovely to him, but she gives him this fond look and a big affectionate hug, so he doesn't say anything.

The next time the Avengers suit up, Bucky's in town, so he joins them, and then afterwards, he's there for the traditional post-fight meal (Chinese this time, since they were fighting aliens on Canal Street), and Bruce invites him along the next time he and Steve are going to a Mets game, but then Tony has a scientific breakthrough (meaning, Tony doesn't like it when Bruce goes out with other friends), and Steve and Bucky end up sitting behind home plate together like it was 1934 instead of 2014.

The next time Pepper invites Steve to one of their cocktail parties, she doesn't write "and guest," she writes, "and Bucky," and Steve's good with that, because Bucky's always been the best date he ever had.
